I am not a expert but will try to
give you a little info on the subject of Vaseline Glass.
Vaseline Glass has been around
for a very long time and one of the primary ingredients used to make the glass is uranium.
When placed under
ultraviolet rays ( or black light ) vaseline glass will glow . The high energy emissions
of electrons from the black light cause the uranium oxide particles in the vaseline glass
to become unstable and causing the glass to glow.
It does not take a expert to tell
if a peice of glass is vaseline as long as you have a black light to test with.Vaseline
Glass can be difficult to detect by the human eye alone and even the best experts can be
fooled. Only by testing with a black light can you tell. But cetain colors glow more
bright. For example Boyd makes a glass color called Moss Green but it does not glow as
bright as say Boyd's lemon custard or vaseline. But each peice is very pretty with or
without black lights.
Vaseline glass can be seen from
the color amber through all the shades of yellow, to bright green.
Uranium was a common source of
yellow and green colorant from 1830's to 1940's it was banned as a glass colourant because
uranium was used to make the Atom Bomb, both the U.S. and U.K. Governments restricted
access to uranium for military reasons.
Uranium glass is radio-active. If
you apply a geiger-counter you will get a positive reading. But the levels are not in any
way harmful.Several tests have proved this.
Some companies now use uranium as
a colorant. The price of uranium oxide is high, so it effects the popularity of useing
uranium in glass .There are also strict regulations for useing uranium for a glass
colorant as well. Current Vaseline Glass pieces are highly sought after by collectors
because their is a such a limited supply.A few that do produce Vaseline Glass are Fenton,
Boyd, and Mosser.
