Northeastern led after the doubles competition 2-1 as the duo of Holly McKee and Maryna Tkachenko soundly defeated Shannon Wallis and Chrissie Cooper 8-2. The Lady Reds picked up another point at #3 doubles as Nina Wenner and Gabriella del Campo defeated Rosa Diaz-Guzman and Melanie Zilles 9-7. Tarleton stayed alive with a thrilling victory at #1 doubles as Alicia Cummings and Lauren Barzilla over Simona Stoica and Amanda Stone 9-7. The Lady Reds pushed the lead to 4-1, as Tkachenko defeated Barzilla 6-0, 6-3 and Stoica cruised by Diaz-Guzman 6-0, 6-2. Tarleton's Cummings defeated McKee 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), Wallis defeated Stone 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, Cooper defeated Wenner 6-3, 6-3 and Zilles defeated del Campo 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). Northeastern finishes with a 24-4 mark for 2006, as Tarleton will continue on to the National Tournament in Kansas City later this month. (5-4-06) TULSA, Okla. ---- Northeastern State and Tarleton State advanced to Friday's final with convincing victories over Cameron and St. Edwards at the Case Tennis Center located on the campus of Tulsa University. The TexAnns took all three doubles matches and Shannon Wallis defeated Janeel Otero 6-0, 6-1 and Melanie Zilles took care of Piasha Van Tho 6-0, 6-1 to round out the 5-0 Tarleton victory . Northeastern State's won two of three in doubles action as Simona Stoica and Amanda Stone defeated Moreira and Romero 85, as Holly McKee and Maryna Tkachenko defeated King and Seca 8-2. The only Aggie highlight was a #3 doubles where Ayumi Kirai and Carolina Vera-Vera defeated Gabriella del Campo and Nina Wenner 8-5. The Lady Reds flexed its muscles in singles, as Stone defeated Seca 6-2, 6-2, Wenner advenged the loss in doubles by defeating Vera-Vera 6-1, 6-1 and Tkachenko won the first 11 games of match and defeated King 6-0, 6-1. Tarleton and Northeastern State will meet for the third time this season and the winner will move on the National Tournament next week in Kansas City, Mo. Gabriella del Campo/Nina Wenner (NSU) 8-5 Match Notes: #1 seed Northeastern State will meet #2 seed Tarleton State on Friday for the Regional Championship Back to top LSC Title Eludes NSU (4-21-06) WICHITA FALLS, Texas --- Northeastern State's upset bid for a Lone Star Conference women's tennis championship came up just short Friday afternoon with top-seeded and 15th-ranked Abilene Christian holding on for a 5-4 decision in the title match. Leading 2-1 after picking up doubles victories at Nos. 1 and 2, the Lady Reds saw the Wildcats rally to tie the match at 4-all with No. 4 singles players Amanda Stone (NSU) and Lana Pavlin (ACU) on the court to decide the match. Pavlin took the opening set 7-6 with a 7-4 win in the tie-breaker, but Stone sent the match into a third set with a 6-4 win. Pavlin built a 4-1 lead in the third before Stone experienced severe leg cramps and a medical timeout was issued. The Claremore junior received hydration therapy and was allowed to return to the courts where she won the next game to pull to within 4-2. However, she lost the next game and two points into the eighth game, head coach Ron Cox made the decision to halt the match to prevent Stone from sustaining further injury and ACU escaped with the win. "It was dog fight," said Cox from the road late Friday evening, "and I think our team really respected the way Amanda fought through. She kept telling me she wanted to finish, but we need her for the upcoming regional tournament. Amanda had a tough three set win earlier in the day against Tarleton and it took a lot out of her. "I couldn't be more proud of a team for how we played in the tournament." Stone and Simona Stoica edged Irene Squillaci and Meghan Brown, 9-7, at No. 1 doubles while Holly McKee and Maryna Tkachenko used an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for a 2-1 lead. Nina Wenner and Gabriella del Campo lost 8-0. Stoica avenged an earlier loss to Meghan Brown with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles and Tkachenko needed three sets to dispose of Holly Lindloff 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3. Holly McKee fell 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1, Wenner lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5 and del Campo won her first set against Sara Baker, 2-6, before bowing out 6-4, 6-2. Northeastern State will await next week's formal announcement for the NCAA Division II Central Regional pairings. Sites will be determined by the Championship Committee and the Lady Reds are in a position to possibly host one of the two Central Regionals for yet another year. ACU is almost guaranteed to host since it is the No. 1 team in the latest regional ranking. Tarleton State and NSU entered the LSC Tournament second and third, respectively, and the two teams split in duals this season. The Lady Reds improved to 21-2 on the year. NSU earned straight set shutouts in singles action with Holly McKee, Simona Stoica, Maryna Tkachenko and Gabriella del Campo blanking their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Amanda Stone won her first match over Laura Rutten 6-2, then got a 6-0 win in the second set, while Nina Wenner beat Michelle Polk 6-0, 6-1. In doubles action, each team recorded 8-1 wins. Northeastern State, ranked 25th nationally, will bid for a Lone Star Conference championship next week when the Lady Reds take part in the LSC Tournament in Wichita Falls, Texas. On Friday, NSU blanked Eastern New Mexico 9-0 in another league match. The Lady Reds improved to 19-2 overall and 9-2 in LSC action, while MSU fell to 11-3. NSU is ranked third in the NCAA Division II Central Region and the Mustangs are fourth. Against Midwestern State, Northeastern held a 2-1 edge after winning at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, then picked up straight sets wins at all six singles matches, including Tkachenko's 6-2, 6-2 win over Cilia Muller at No. 3. In the match with the Zias, Holly McKee and Gabriella del Campo needed extra sets to earn wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, respectively. The Lady Reds improved to 17-2 on the year and lost only five singles games and four doubles games while routing the Rattlers. Holly McKee and Gabriella del Campo logged straight set 6-0 wins at Nos. 1 and 6 singles, respectively, while Simona Stoica, Maryana Tkachenko and Nina Wenner lost just one game each. Amanda Stone, at No. 4 singles, dropped two games in the second set but cruised 6-0, 6-2. Northeastern State will be idle until next weekend when the Lady Reds travel to Wichita Falls to participate in the Midwestern State Classic. NSU improved to 9-2 overall and 4-2 in LSC action. The Lady Reds logged three wins in doubles action against SBU before rain set in and delayed the event for more than 2 hours. When play resumed, NSU needed just a little more than an hour to pick up wins at Nos. 1 and 3 singles to claim the victory. Holly McKee recorded 6-1, 6-0 wins over Ivetta Wolfgramm and Maryna Tkachenko shutout Lynne Klassen 6-0, 6-0. Against ECU, Northeastern dropped an 8-6 decision at No. 1 doubles but led 2-1 when its Nos. 2 and 3 doubles teams cruised to 8-0 and 8-2 wins. The Lady Reds closed out the match with three singles victories with Tkachenko defeating Ana Fernandez 6-0, 6-0, Amanda Stone rolling past Katrina Cousins 6-0, 6-1 and Nina Wenner bettering Amanda Rhynes 6-0, 6-0. The Lady Reds, 7-2 overall, blanked Southeastern Oklahoma State 9-0 in a Lone Star Conference match before dispatching Missouri Southern 8-0 later in the morning session. All three doubles teams cruised to easy victories during the two matches and NSU's singles players all earned straight sets wins. The only exception was Simona Stoica in her match with MSSU. That match was called with no decision after the Lady Reds had already won the match. Northeastern State will play Southwest Baptist at 8 a.m. Saturday before meeting East Central in Lone Star Conference action at 1:30 that afternoon.
