Toomer Tied For 12th at West Regional (5-2-05)

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- Northeastern State's Alli Toomer faltered on the back nine in her second round Monday and sits in a tie for 12th place at the 2005 NCAA Division II West Region Golf Tournament at Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Toomer, NSU's junior playing as an individual in the regional, fired a two-over 75 on the first 18 holes and was just three over heading into the back nine of the second round. However, she ended the round with an 80 and is +9 heading into tomorrow's final 18 holes.

Toomer is fighting for an at-large berth into next week's national tournament but must have a great round on Tuesday to earn her way in. The top two teams will advance as well as the two lowest individual scores from the rest of the field.

Drury University leads the team event just two shots ahead of Central Oklahoma and five better than St. Mary's (Texas). Host Western Washington is in fourth, six shots off the pace, while Tarleton State and Western New Mexico are a distant fifth and six some 29 and 32 shots back, respectively.

CENTRAL OKLAHOMA WOMEN CLAIM SECOND STRAIGHT LSC GOLF CROWN; NSU IS RUNNER-UP (4/19/05)

ROANOKE, Texas -- All four of Central Oklahoma's golfers finished among the top 12 individually as UCO topped a stellar field to claim its second straight Lone Star Conference women's golf championship here Tuesday at Trophy Club Country Club.

UCO ranked fifth nationally by Golftstat.com, posted a 306 team total on Tuesday, while runner-up Northeastern State shot 307 and Texas A&M-Commerce 308 in a star-studded finale. The Bronchos maintained their five-shot advantage over the field, finishing with a 625 total to NSU's 631. A&M-Commerce was third at 633, while Tarleton State was fourth at 634. West Texas A&M (665) and Southwestern Oklahoma (732) rounded out the field.

The Bronchos were forced to compete with just four players as defending medalist Kelly Callison withdrew after Sunday's practice round upon learning of a death in her family. UCO's four remaining golfers made up for Callison's absence with consistent play as the foursome combined for five rounds below 80, with a low round of 74 and a high of 83.

UCO freshman Emily Kirk followed in Callison's footsteps by winning LSC medalist honors to cap a fabulous freshman campaign. Kirk, named the LSC's Freshman of the Year on Sunday, toured the par-72 Hogan Course at TCCC with scores of 74 and 76 for a two-day 150 total. That was one stroke better than Northeastern's Alli Toomer, who shot 79-72 for a 151 total.

Joining Kirk and Toomer on the LSC All-Tournament Team were Adi Attaway of Texas A&M-Commerce (152), Leah Weigle of NSU (152) and Alesha Hurt from Tarleton State (153).

Besides Kirk, UCO got a sixth-place effort from Claire Sturdivan (156), while Ashley Kelley (159) finished 11th and Stephanie Blan (160) was 12th.

UCO's women will receive the LSC's automatic berth to the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships.
