NSU's season ended at 21-10, while ASU improved to 28-3 and advanced to Saturday's semifinals against the winner of the West Texas A&M versus Washburn game. The Lady Reds, the No. 6 seed in the field, scored 11 straight points to overcome a 4-0 deficit early to lead the entire first half with a smothering defensive effort that held ASU's All-American, Natalja Tsurbakova, without a basket until 1.8 seconds left in the period. NSU stretched its margin to nine twice, 15-6 and 17-8, before seniors Jenna Miller and Rikki Hall each picked up two fouls midway through the opening 20 minutes. What transpired over the final 9:59 was disheartening as ASU whittled away and trailed 23-20 at the break. Head coach Randy Gipson said having his two front-line players on the bench was the difference in the contest. "Rikki and Jenna were the two players who could have allowed us to push our lead even further, but were weren't able to take advantage of the situation with both of them on the bench," said Gipson, whose team lost to the Rambelles for the third time this season. Tsurbakova scored 11 of her team-high 17 points in the final period. Sharon Ballenger's jumper with 10:24 left put he Rambelles in front for good as NSU was held without a basket over a span of 6:14. That resulted in a 48-36 ASU cushion. "Angelo State is so skilled," said Gipson, "and Tsurbakova can score, pass and hit open people. That puts a lot of pressure on defenses." The Lady Reds made a valliant comeback bid late and erased their 12-point deficit to three, 52-49, on Alicia Keys' trey. Miller, who led all scorers with a season-high 23 points, scored seven points during the 12-4 run, but that's as close as NSU could get. ASU closed out the contest by hitting 9-of-11 free throws to provide the final scoring. The Rambelles, limited to 32 percent shooting in the first half, connected on 15-of-26 (.577) in the final period. Despite being ousted in the opening round, Gipson said this year's team was something special. "I am extremely proud of our five seniors," said Gipson, "especially (Jenna) Miller, (Alicia) Keys and (Katy) Kelley who played on all three of our NCAA Tournament teams. These five ladies have built a solid foundation for the future of Lady Reds basketball." NSU, which fell to 21-8, entered the LSC tourney ranked No. 6 in the region and also should receive a bid to the regional. Pairings and invitations will be announced by the NCAA Selection Committee at 9 p.m. (CST) Sunday. Johnson, a Missouri City, Texas junior, came off the bench to score a game-high 22 points and grab 14 rebounds to overshadow ASU All-America Natalja Tsurbakova. Tsurbakova, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, had 1 points and eight caroms for the Rambelles. NSU fell behind 8-0 early and never led in the contest. Twice in the second half the Lady Reds tied the game, 32-32 and 49-49, the latter coming with just 3:35 to play. However, Northeastern was unable to connect on another shot the rest of the way as ASU got two baskets and made all eight of its free throws. Poor field goal shooting eventually led to NSU's demise. The Lady Reds were 18-of-50 on the night (.360) and a dismal two-of-20 from behind the arc. Angelo State was much more proficient hitting 22-of-46 field goals and 15-of-20 free throws. Alicia Keys and Jenna Miller paced Northeastern State with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Along with Johnson and Tsurbakova, Keys and Rikki Hall claimed All-Tournament honors, as did Celeste Stevenson from West Texas A&M and Stephanie Riles from Abilene Christian. NSU Headed to LSC Title Game (3-4-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State converted all 10 of its free throws in overtime and the Lady Reds eliminated West Texas A&M, 62-53, in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament at Dobbins Field House Friday night. The victory sets up Saturday's championship game where NSU, the LSC North champion, will meet Angelo State, the South Division titleholder, at 7 p.m. ASU ousted Abilene Christian, 74-61, in the other semifinal game. The winner gets an automatic bid into next week's NCAA Division II South Central Regional. West Texas A&M (21-8) used an 18-4 run over the final 11:27 to force overtime. Northeastern had built a seemingly comfortable 43-29 cushion at that point, but scored only two buckets the rest of the way. Both teams had a chance to win in regulation but failed to capitalize. WTAMU tied the game at 47-all with 1:55 left and neither team scored during the remainder of the second half. Northeastern State (21-8) never trailed in the extra session. Alicia Keys, who scored 14 points, canned a 3-point field goal just :10 into OT and NSU went on stake a 56-49 advantage of four Jenna Miller free throws and another Keys' jumper. West Texas came no closer than 56-52 after a bucket-and-one from Tiffany Lewis before the Lady Reds answered with 6-1 run on four Cara Busson charity tosses and two from Bobbi Jo Truelove. Rikki Hall scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the first half as NSU opened up a 27-14 lead at halftime. As much as NSU controlled the first 20 minutes by hitting 43 percent from the floor, the second half belonged to WTAMU. The Lady Buffs limited Northeastern to eight-of-28 shooting from the field which led to the eventual comeback bid. Lewis and Celeste Stevenson led the Lady Buffaloes with 13 points apiece. Lady Reds Roll Over Savages; Clinch Home Playoff Berth (2-24-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State celebrated Senior Night on Thursday by claiming at least a share of its third consecutive Lone Star North Division championship with a convincing 66-38 win over Southeastern Oklahoma State at Dobbins Field House. With only one game remaining in the regular season, NSU improved to 18-8 overall and took over sole possession of first place in the league standings at 8-3 by virtue of Southwestern's 69-40 win at Tarleton State. Lady Reds Snap Streak (2-19-05) LAWTON, Okla. --- Northeastern State broke its three game losing skid Saturday afternoon with a 51-47 Lone Star North Division victory over Cameron at Aggie Gymnasium. The victory kept NSU in at least a tie for first place in the LSC North race with Tarleton. The results of the TSU versus East Central game were unavailable. The Lady Reds (17-8 overall and 7-3) used a 13-2 run over a five minute span late in the game to secure the win. Cameron fell to 11-14 and 5-5. CU held a 38-35 edge with 5:50 to play when Brittany Cooksey nailed a 10-footer in the lane. However, the Aggies managed only one more basket until :37 remaining and that was all the Lady Reds needed. Bobbi Jo Truelove's trey and Rikki Hall's basket tied the game at 40-40 with 4:10 left, the NSU reeled off the game's next eight points for a 48-40 advantage with :48 to go. During the run, Jenna Miller had a key three-point field goal and Cara Busson converted three-of-four free throws. But, NSU's ineffectiveness at the charity stripe late allowed Cameron to stay close. Joneatta Brown's traditional bucket-and-one brought CU to within 48-43 with :37 left and a quick fould put Truelove at the line where she missed both attempts. Brown then added another basket with :18 left for a 48-45 NSU edge. Hall made one free throw at the :17 mark and following a missed Cameron field goal attempt, Miller hit both of her charity tosses to seal the deal. NSU held a 21-19 lead at halftime as both teams struggled from the floor. Cameron was limited to five field goals in the frame (on 22 attempts) and NSU was eight-for-23. Miller's 14 points paced the Lady Reds, while teammates Busson and Hall added a dozen each. Cooksey and Brown had 14 to lead Cameron.
