Season Ends for Lady Reds (3-10-06) TOPEKA, Kansas --- West Texas A&M took advantage of its size advantage with 42 points in the paint and eliminated Northeastern State, 78-64, in the opening round of the 2006 NCAA Division II Women's South Central Regional at Lee Arena on the Washburn campus Friday afternoon.NSU ended its season at 18-11. The Lady Buffaloes (28-3) advanced to Saturday's semifinals and will play Emporia State at 5 p.m. The Lady Reds had no answer for WTAMU's inside game as front-line players Keisha Monroe, Alicia Saunders and Mariah Willis combined for 34 points. That, combined with Northeastern's field goal shooting woes, were too much to overcome. "We didn't do the things we needed to do defensively to give ourselves a chance," said NSU head coach Randy Gipson. "West Texas A&M is a great team and we never really got into a defensive rhythm against them." All but two of WTAMU's 34 first-half points came from the paint or free throw line as it opened up an insurmountable 36-22 margin at the intermission. The lead ballooned to as many as 24 points late in the contest before the Lady Reds closed out the contest on a 12-2 run to make the final outcome more respectable. Verressa Gaston, whose 16 points led NSU, summed up the game rather succinctly. "We didn't take it to them strong enough," the Fort Gibson sophomore center said. Gaston will undergo knee surgery to repair a partially torn ACL on her left knee next week and will spend the off-season in rehabilitation for the second straight year. She had the same surgery on her right knee after the 2005 season was completed. Monroe had 14 points and led four West Texas A&M players in double figures. Emily Brister, the freshman player of the year in the Lone Star South Division, added 13, Saunders added a double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and narrowly missed a triple-double with eight blocked shots. Jennifer Brock chipped in 10. In making their fourth consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament appearance, the Lady Reds saw their tourney record fall to 2-4. NSU has bowed out in the opening round on three occasions, but was a Sweet 16 team in 2004. Senior guards, Bobbi Jo Truelove and Cara Busson ended their careers at Northeastern State on Friday. Both were integral parts of NSU's rising success in women's basketball and participated in all four NCAA Tournaments. Busson, who missed several games late with a concussion, will be remembered as the Lady Reds' all-time assists leader for a season and career. The Wadsworth, Ohio, product finished with 429 career assists, including a school-record 118 in 2004. She had 112 this year despite a shortened senior campaign. Truelove had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists on Friday. The tournament appearance was somewhat bittersweet for the Adair native. "My career at NSU was the best experience I could have asked for," Truelove said. "I was a little intimidated playing in this tournament as a freshman, but I was a lot more confident today. "I believe things happen for a reason. We were a great team this year but we struggled some late in the year. Struggles in life make you stronger. I had a great coach to lead and guide me and I wouldn't trade it for anything." West Texas A&M shot 50 percent in the second half (11-of-22) and 45 percent from the field for the game. The Lady Buffs were 25-of-31 at the charity stripe and never gave NSU a chance to make a bona fide comeback charge. They also controlled the boards with a 44-33 advantage in rebounding. NSU Ousted at LSC Tournament (2-28-06) SAN ANGELO, Texas --- Britinee Davis scored a game-high 19 points and Angelo State eliminated Northeastern State in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Postseason Tournament, 64-52, at the Junell Center/Stephens Arena Tuesday night. The Lady Reds, 18-10, must now wait until Sunday evening when the NCAA Tournament pairings are announced for the South Central Region. The eight team regional will feature the tourney champions from the LSC, Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Assocation and Heartland Conference with the next five highest-ranked teams filling out the rest of the bracket. NSU was ranked No. 6 this week and at least three schools behind it, Southwestern, Texas A&M-Commerce and Tarleton State, all lost in LSC tournament action. Davis poured through 12 of her 19 points in the second half as ASU broke a 29-29 tie at halftime by shooting 52.4 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Rambelles, 21-7, will advance to Friday's LSC Semifinals in Canyon, Texas, where they will meet Texas Woman's which upset Southwestern Oklahoma State Tuesday night. The other semifinals will feature host West Texas A&M against Texas A&M-Commerce. Angelo State took control of the game by using a 7-0 run midway through the second half that turned a 42-all deadlock into an insurmountable 49-42 lead with 9:18 left. Davis, Asheia Haynes and Ashley King all hit buckets and Kandra Lakey had a free throw during the spurt. Verressa Gaston, who's 14 points led the Lady Reds, connected on a pair of free throws to cut the NSU deficit to five before Davis converted a layup, Meghann LeJeune had a free throw and Christina Johnson's basket put ASU in front 54-44 at the 7:01 mark. The Lady Reds came no closer than six, 54-48, the rest of the way and made only six-of-19 shots in the second stanza. Cara Busson, who led Northeastern State with 22 points in the earlier meeting against Angelo State, had 11 points in the first half. However, Busson and teammate Jonna Gordon, who scored a career-high 10 points, both fouled out with more than two minutes remaining in the contest. NSU Falls at SOSU; Enters LSC Tourney at No. 3 (2-25-06) DURANT, Okla. --- Northeastern State's comeback bid fell short here Saturday evening as Southeastern Oklahoma State earned a 60-57 win over the Lady Reds in the regular season finale at Bloomer Sullivan Gym.NSU fell to 18-9 overall and 7-5 in Lone Star North play and ended the year tied with Texas A&M-Commerce in second place. However, A&M-Commerce will be the No. 2 seed and NSU the third seed in next week's LSC Postseason Tournament by virtue of tie-breaker scenarios. TAMUC lost at Southwestern earlier in the day. Southeastern's season ended at 9-18 and 4-8, but the Savage Storm won its final two games of the year. The Lady Reds fell behind 28-20 at halftime and by as many as 13 (39-26) in the second half. But, NSU caught fire and parlayed a 24-4 run into a 48-43 lead with 7:32 to play. SOSU slowed down the Lady Reds' rally with a trifecta from SamiJo Cotton-Black and two free throws from Lora Loy a minute later to knot the game at 48. NSU extended its lead to as many as six, 57-51, with 2:39 to go but would not score again. Jessica Hocker missed her free throw on a bucket-and-one opportunity and teammate Roni Morrow gathered the offensive rebound. Just five seconds later, Cotton-Black nailed a short jumper and was fouled, but completed the three-point play to whittle the SOSU deficit to 57-56 with 1:48 left. Both teams went scoreless on their next possessions and Morrow's bucket with 13.1 seconds left gave Southeastern the lead for good. Monica Atilio was charged with a turnover, forcing the Lady Reds to foul, with eight seconds left and Cassie Watson made both charity tosses for the final verdict. Verressa Gaston recorded her sixth double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, but was 5-of-17 from the floor. Cotton-Black had 18 and Loy 16 for Southeastern. Northeastern State will open tournament action on the road at Angelo State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Junnell Center in San Angelo, Texas. Lady Reds Earn LSC Tourney Berth With Win over ECU (2-22-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- The scenario was simple for Randy Gipson and his Northeastern State Lady Reds basketball team Wednesday night --- win and they're in.The Lady Reds did that by scoring just enough points to edge East Central, 39-30, in a women's Lone Star Conference North Division game at Dobbins Field House on Senior Night. NSU (18-8 overall and 7-4 in league play) can finish either as the second or third seed in next week's LSC Postseason Tournament depending on the outcome of Saturday's regular season finale in the conference. (See notes below for details on NSU's tourney fortunes). Neither team was able to find its offensive niche and the Lady Reds struggled through a 12-for-39 shooting performance (30.8 percent) to claim the victory. ECU (11-14 and 5-6) managed only 35.1 percent shooting on the night and did not make a 3-point basket in nine tries. After leading 14-10 at halftime, NSU built a 22-15 advantage at the 13:58 mark on Monica Atilio's trey as the Lady Reds outscored ECU 8-5 in the first six minutes. The Lady Tigers cut its deficit to two twice, 28-26 and 30-28, before Cara Busson rolled in a bucket on a layup, Verressa Gaston posted up for an easy two in the paint and Atilio nailed the door shut with another trifecta to put NSU in front by nine at 37-28 with just under a minute to go. Gaston led all scorers with her fifth double-double of the year as the sophomore poured through 13 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Wendy Fehrenbach added nie and Atilio had eight. East Central did not have a player in double figures, but was paced by Jastin Flenory's eight points. Northeastern State will close out the regular season on Saturday night when it travels to Durant to meet Southeastern Oklahoma State at 6:00 p.m. NOTES: Northeastern State can still claim a share of the LSC North championship, but it may not be in NSU's best interest. If the Lady Reds beat SOSU and Texas A&M-Commerce upends Southwestern, the three teams would tie for the league championship. However, tie-breaker scenarios would make NSU the third seed in the LSC Tournament next week ... If NSU beats Southeastern and SWOSU earns a victory over A&M-Commerce, Southwestern would win the LSC title, NSU would finish as the No. 2 seed and TAMU-Commerce would be No. 3. The No. 4 seed is yet to be determined between East Central and Cameron ... Northeastern State celebrated Senior Night and paid tribute to its two senior student-athletes: Cara Busson and Bobbi Jo Truelove ... Busson is the all-time assists leader at NSU with 420 ... Truelove is a four-year letter winner and the "consummate team player" according to head coach Randy Gipson ... the two seniors have helped NSU to its best run in women's basketball history with 88 wins over four years, three LSC North championships and three NCAA Tournament berths ... they could make it four if NSU continues its winning fortunes ... the Lady Reds are the No. 6 seed in the South Central Region ... tournament champions from the LSC, MIAA and Heartland conferences receive automatic bids and the next five highest ranked teams received berths into the South Central Regional. Sharp-Shooting NSU Rolls Past Cameron (2-15-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State blistered the nets Wednesday night by hitting 12-of-21 shots from behind the arc and 54 percent from the floor overall to dispose of Cameron, 74-64, in a women's Lone Star North Division game at Dobbins Field House.Verressa Gaston poured through a career-high 25 points and Charlotte Dikeman matched her career best with 14 points as the Lady Reds improved to 17-7 overall and 6-3 in LSC North action to stay in second place in the standing behind Southwestern, which battered Central Oklahoma 62-42 on Wednesday. NSU connected on nine treys in the opening half (on 14 tries) and hit its first six three-pointers to quickly build a double digit advantage. Dikeman's trey with 14:37 left put the Lady Reds comfortably in front 17-7 as Cameron made only one threat to cut its defict to five during the opening 20 minutes. The Lady Aggies (13-11 and 4-5) trailed by just six, 56-50 midway through the second stanza before the Lady Reds caught fire again. After a Gaston layup, Dikeman, who was 4-of-4 from the arc, nailed a trey to put NSU in front 63-50 with just over eight minutes left. Northeastern would continue to hold a double digit advantage the rest of the way on the strength of its 11-of-21 shooting performance in the final period. Joneatta Brown came off the bench to lead Cameron with 20 points, while Brittany Cooksey and Tiffany Williams added 15 apiece. Wendy Fehrenbach was 4-of-6 from behind the stripe and finished with 14 points for the Lady Reds. Cara Busson had six assists for NSU as well. Revenge Sweet for Lady Reds (2-11-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Susan Snell hit three free throws with no time remaining in regulation and Bobbi Jo Truelove scored seven points in overtime as Northeastern State knocked off Texas A&M-Commerce, 67-61, at Dobbins Field House Saturday in a classic women's Lone Star North encounter. The Lady Reds' victory was especially sweet considering the Lady Lions pulled off an improbable 92-88 double overtime win in the first meeting after NSU had led by four with less than three seconds remaining in the first OT session. This time, though, it was Snell's clutch free throws that opened the door for Northeastern, which trailed by 12 with 8:34 left in the second half. The Kansas, Okla. sophomore, was fouled by Althea Byfield as the buzzer sounded and Snell calmly sank all three charity tosses to tie the game at 56-all and send the game to an extra session. From there, it was Adair, Okla. senior Truelove that put the team on her shoulders by scoring back-to-back treys to help NSU open up a 66-59 advantage with just under a minute left. Truelove also sank a free throw with :14 left to seal the verdict as she finished the game with a team-high 16 points. NSU was four-of-six from the floor in overtime. After shooting 50 percent from the floor in the opening half and forging a 35-27 lead at intermission, A&M-Commerce (13-10 and 5-3) struggled to just seven-of-25 in the final half and was one-of-five in the OT period. Atilio Hits 18 in NSU Win (2-4-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Monica Atilio scored a career-high 18 points and Verressa Gaston added a double-double as Northeastern State rallied to upend Southeastern Oklahoma State, 71-63, in a women's Lone Star North Division encounter at Dobbins Field House Saturday.A standing-room-only Hall of Fame crowd witnessed the Lady Reds (15-6 and 4-2) climb back atop the league standings with the win over SOSU (7-14 and 1-5). NSU, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Texas A&M-Commerce all sport identical 4-2 marks at the midway point of the conference slate. Atilio, a freshman, hit five treys and scored 12 of her points in the final half as the Lady Reds erased a 36-30 halftime deficit. Much of the damage inflicted by NSU came from beyond the arc in the last 20 minutes with a sparkling six-of-10 effort. Overall, Northeastern shot 53 percent in the second half and limited the Savage Storm to just 38.5 percent shooting from the floor. NSU began the final half with a 20-4 flurry that essentially put the game out of reach, 50-40, at the 13:16 mark. Bobbi Jo Truelove's bucket and back-to-back trifectas from Wendy Fehrenbach sparked another rally as NSU's advantage ballooned to 62-44 over the next five minutes and as much as 69-50 with just under six minutes to play. However, after Gaston fouled out with 5:35 left, the Savage Storm went on a frenetic 13-0 run to close the gap to 69-63 with just :30 remaining. Fehrenbach, though, sealed the victory with a pair of charity tosses just two seconds later and Cassie Watson's three-point effort was off the mark and NSU ran out the clock for the win. Gaston had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Katrina Webb chipped in 11 off the bench to back up Atilio's feat. Jessica Hocker paced SOSU with 15 points, while SamiJo Cotton-Black added 12 and Roni Morrow had 10. Lady Lions Rally Past NSU (Jan. 21, 2006) COMMERCE, Texas --- If a cat has nine lives, Texas A&M-Commerce's Lady Lions may have used most of them Saturday afternoon.TAMUC forced overtime with a three-point field goal, scored four unanswered points in the final two seconds of the first overtime, then used an 8-4 run in the second OT session to rally for a 92-88 victory over Northeastern State in an action-packed women's Lone Star North game. Charlotte Dikeman made just one-of-two free throws with 5.2 seconds left to put the Lady Reds in front 84-80. It was NSU's only miss at the charity stipe on the day. Rashida Wilson was fouled with 2.8 left and made both free throws for AMC for an 84-82 Northeastern edge. Game over, right? NSU's attempt to inbound the ball hit the underneath of the backboard and into the hands of Kanani Marshall, who drained a 10-foot jumper as time expired to knot the game and force a second overtime. The events stunned the Lady Reds and NSU never recovered. In regulation, Jennifer McCord forced the first extra session by nailing a 22-foot jumper to knot the game at 70-all with :07 left. Northeastern State's Verressa Gaston, who scored a game-high 23 points off the bench, could have ended it on the final shot, but her layup was short as time expired. All-in-all, the loss dropped Northeastern State to 12-5 and 1-1 in league play, while A&M-Commerce improved to 10-7 and 2-0. It also overshadowed an amazing shooting effort on the part of NSU, which made 14 three-point field goals and 20-of-21 free throws on the afternoon. NSU had a seemingly comfortable 30-18 lead with 4:46 to go in the first half and it held a 32-24 cushion at the half. The two teams battled to three ties and six lead changes until Dikeman gave the Lady Reds the lead for good with 2:56 showing. Lizzie Brenner had 14 points and nine rebounds to pace Central Oklahoma, who shot just 29.6 percent from the field for the game. Truelove Shines Again in Lady Reds Win (01-14-06) STEPHENVILLE, Texas --- After missing Thursday game at Midwestern State with a stomach virus, Northeastern State's Bobbi Jo Truelove turned in a career performance on Saturday night as she and the Lady Reds came from behind to edge Tarleton State, 66-60, in a women's Lone Star Conference crossover game at Wisdom Gym.Truelove, a senior guard, poured through 21 points on the night and her four consecutive free throws in the final :13 sealed the NSU victory. Although her shooting statistics were not that impressive (five-of-13), she did nail four of nine from behind the arc and seven-of-eight from the charity stripe. The Lady Reds improved to 11-4 on the year, while the TexAnns dropped to 10-5. Mired in a 32 percent shooting effort over the first 20 minutes, NSU came to life in the second period by connecting on 11 of its 20 shots in the frame for 55 percent. The Lady Reds trailed 27-24 at intermission and the two teams battled back and forth in final half as the game was tied eight times and featured 11 lead changes. With the game knotted at 56-all with 1:09 to play, Charlotte Dikeman drained a three-point basket to give the Lady Reds the lead for good. Tarleton State pulled to within 59-58 just seconds later when Amanda Franklin hit both shots at the free throw line. However, on NSU's next possession, Truelove made one-of-two free throws and Katrina Webb grabbed the offensive rebound for an easy basket to give the Lady Reds a 62-58 edge. TSU countered with a layup from Franklin at the :13 mark before Truelove closed out the affair with four unanswered points at the charity stripe for the final verdict. Iveta Griffin led the TexAnns with 17 points, 11 of those coming at the charity stripe. Northeastern State will open LSC North Division play at home on Monday night by hosting arch-rival Central Oklahoma at 6 p.m. in Dobbins Field House. The loss snapped NSU's four-game winning streak as the Lady Reds fell to 10-4 on the year. MSU improved to 5-8. Maples took advantage a short-handed NSU roster to pour in 23 points and grab 18 rebounds. The Lady Reds, playing without senior guard Bobbi Jo Truelove who was suffering from a stomach virus, and a gimpy Verressa Gaston, battled for much of the contest and made a thrilling comeback bid late that fell just short. The Mustangs opened up a 58-48 cushion with 3:26 to play with a 6-0 run capped by Angie Faurot's jumper and led 60-51 just over a minute later on a pair of Maples' free throws. However, the Lady Reds answered by scoring the game's next seven points, a Katrina Webb bucket, two charity tosses from Wendy Fehrenbach and Susan Snell's trey, to cut their deficit to 60-58 with 1:04 showing. MSU missed its next two shots, but grabbed two offensive rebounds, forcing Northeastern State to foul. Tia Banks converted one-of-two from the line and NSU had a chance to force an extra session with :11 to go. But, the Mustangs fouled Cara Busson on NSU's next possession and the senior made the front end of the two free throws. After intentionally missing the second, the Lady Reds forced a Midwestern State turnover with 4.0 seconds to play. Webb's shot from 15 feet away went awry, NSU fouled on the rebound and Brandi Bush preserved the Mustang's win with two free throws with one-tenth of a second left for the final outcome. NSU led 27-24 at halftime despite shooting a meager 37 percent from the floor in the period. Fehrenbach paced NSU's balanced scoring attack with 12 points, while Snell and Webb chipped in 10 apiece. MSU held a sizeable 41-29 lead in the rebounding category. And, the Lady Reds were the own worst enemy with a miserable 13-of-24 performance from the charity stripe. Truelove, Lady Reds Dump West Texas A&M (01-07-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Bobbi Jo Truelove matched a career-high with 19 points, 14 of those coming in the final half, and Northeastern State posted a 68-60 win over 14th-ranked West Texas A&M in a women's Lone Star Conference crossover game at Dobbins Field House Saturday afternoon.Truelove, an Adair senior, missed her first start of the year after sustaining a sprained ankle in practice on Friday. However, she came off the bench to spark NSU to its third win over a nationally-ranked team this season. The Lady Reds (10-3) have logged wins over Central Arkansas (70-64), Angelo State (66-54) and WTAMU. The Lady Buffaloes lost for just the second time and fell to 10-2. Their only other came came against top-rated Washburn earlier this year. Northeastern, which leads the all-time series 6-4 against West Texas A&M, took a 32-20 lead into intermission after shooting 50 percent from the floor, including five-of-seven three-point attempts, in the frame. However, WTAMU rallied to make things quite interesting down the stretch. The Lady Buffs went on a 19-8 run to pull to within 44-43 with 9:21 left only to see NSU answer with a 10-0 run to surge ahead again by 11, 54-43, with 5:38 to play. West Texas A&M rallied again over the next four minutes to trail 57-54 at the 1:49 mark. But, Truelove drained a trey as the shot clock expired 30 seconds later and Monica Atilio added a pair of free throws on NSU's next possession for a 62-54 cushion. WTAMU came no closer than six the rest of the way as the Lady Reds closed out the contest by converting six-of-eight charity tosses. Wendy Fehrenbach, who was perfect on three treys in the first half, and Susan Snell trailed Truelove as each chipped in 10 points for NSU. Emily Brister, who leads the LSC in scoring, managed just 15, while Jennifer Brock added 12. Keisha Monroe had a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Mariah Willis also had 11 points. Northeastern State will play its final two LSC crossover games next week on the road. Second Half Shooting Lifts Lady Reds Past Zias (01-05-06) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Katrina Webb tossed in a career-high 18 points on nine-of-14 shooting to lead Northeastern State to a 64-54 victory over visiting Eastern New Mexico at Dobbins Field House Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference crossover game. The Lady Reds, who have won three straight games dating back to last semester, improved to 9-3 on the year. ENMU fell to 6-6 despite a 28-point performance from Tiana Bryant. NSU erased a 29-21 halftime deficit with a sharp-shooting performance in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Reds connected on 54 percent from the field (15-of-28) in the frame and their defense limited the Zias to only nine field goals on 24 attempts. However, the outcome was not decided until the very end. NSU built a nine point advantage three times in the second half, the last one coming at 56-47 with 3:19 showing on Charlotte Dikeman's bucket. ENMU answered, though, with a 5-2 run over the next 1:40 to pull to within 58-54 at the 1:39 mark. But, NSU sealed the deal by hitting six consecutive free throws and held Eastern New Mexico scoreless to pull out the double digit victory. Webb narrowly missed a double-double by pulling down nine caroms to go along with her team-high 18 points. Dikeman and Bobbi Jo Truelove tossed in 12 points apiece and Monica Atilio chipped in 10 off the bench to pace the Lady Reds. NSU Blasts Ashland at Hoop N' Surf Classic (12-21-05) HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Northeastern State raced out to an 18-point lead in the first half, then cruised to a 65-49 victory over Ashland (Ohio) University at the Hoop N' Surf Classic at Kilauea District Park Gym.NSU, 8-3 on the year, had four players score in double figures. Katrina Webb paced the Lady Reds with 14, followed by Bobbi Jo Truelove with 12, while Charlotte Dikeman and Verressa Gaston chipped in 10 points apiece. Ashland fell to 5-6. The Lady Reds broke a 6-all deadlock with a 12-0 run to take control in the opening stanza and never looked back. After opening up an 33-15 margin, the Eagles went on a 10-0 spurt of their own to pull to within 33-25. However, Wendy Fehrenbach, who had a career-high 19 points just one day ago, nailed her only bucket of the first half, a trey at the buzzer, to put the Lady Reds back in front by 11, 36-25, at halftime. The final 20 minutes also belonged to NSU as the Lady Reds answered every run Ashland attempted to make. Northeastern head coach, Randy Gipson, said his team rose to the challenge against the Eagles. "I couldn't be more pleased with what we got accomplished here," said Gipson, whose team won both games in the Hawaii classic. "We took it to them from the start and we got two wins over two quality opponents here. "Our veterans (Cara Busson and Truelove) really stepped up, especially on defense. We were able to hold their leading scorer (Amber Rall) to just six points. I was proud of our concentration and effort. We were focused and limiting Ashland to 50 points is quite a feat." Ashland had entered the game by averaging 78 points per game and Rall's 18 points per game was a team-high. Catherine Portyrata had 17 to pace the Eagles. The Lady Reds have two days to enjoy the sights of the Islands and Gipson said he and his team can now relax until NSU returns to prepare for the second semester of action. "I am kind of a history buff, so my family and I are planning to tour Pearl Harbor and celebrate our daughter, Carly's, birthday in a couple of days," he said. "We have worked hard this semester to become the team I think we're becoming." Northeastern State will be idle until Jan. 5 when it hosts Eastern New Mexico at 6:00 p.m. at Dobbins Field House. Lei-dy Reds Edge Bearcats at Hoop N' Surf Classic (12-20-05) HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Wendy Fehrenbach scored a career-high 19 points and Verressa Gaston added 11 as Northeastern State battled to a 56-50 victory over Northwest Missouri State in the opening game of the Hoop N' Surf Classic at Kilauea District Park Gym Tuesday.NSU improved to 7-3 on the year, while the Bearcats fell to 6-3. Fehrenbach, a junior guard, scored 11 of her points in the second half as the Lady Reds erased a 23-22 halftime deficit. Head coach Randy Gipson said the win may pay future dividends for his club. "This was a great regional victory for our team," said Gipson. "This will have a lot of implications later in the season and I think it will be classified as a quality win for our program. We kept fighting, defended well and got baskets at critical times. Northwest Missouri State presented us with some problems with the way they play defense, but we attacked them better in the second half and did a good job of making adjustments and made enough plays in other areas to pull out the win." The Bearcats led by as many as seven, 22-15, in the first half before the Lady Reds closed out the period on a 7-1 run to trail by just one point. NSU took the lead for good midway through the final stanza and held on with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. Fehrenbach's efforts, which included five-of-nine treys on the day, also drew praise from Gipson. "Wendy made some big shots today," he said. "She had it honed in pretty well. But, our team, especially in the second half, moved the ball well and found her (Fehrenbach) ready to catch and shoot. I think this will be good for her confidence because she is one of the best pure shooters we've had at NSU." Northeastern shot .500 percent from behind the arc in the second half, but hit just 18-of-47 field goals. The Bearcats, who were paced by Laura Friederich's 13 points, was limited to just .302 shooting from the floor. Monica Atilio came off the bench to add 10 points for the Lady Reds and Cara Busson had a game-high eight rebounds. Ice Cold Shooting Dooms Lady Reds (12-10-05) ABILENE, Texas --- Northeastern State went ice cold from the field in the second half and Abilene Christian had three players score in double figures as the Lady Wildcats posted a 64-57 win at Moody Coliseum Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference crossover action.NSU, which upset 17th-ranked Angelo State on Thursday, fell to 6-3. ACU improved to 4-3. The Lady Reds managed just 27 percent shooting from the floor in the final 20 minutes and Abilene Christian erased a 34-33 deficit by taking the lead for good 2:37 into the final stanza. ACU pushed its margin to as many as nine points, 51-42, with 8:49 to go before NSU mounted a comeback bid that fell short. Susan Snell hit a traditional bucket, followed it up with a three-point field goal and Wendy Fehrenbach's trey brought the Lady Reds to within 51-50 just 1:30 later. However, ACU scored the next four points to reclaim the momentum and made seven-of-eight free throws in the final 1:02 to preserve the victory. Abilene Christian was 20-26 at the charity stripe on the day, compared to only three-of-five for NSU. The game was tied 16 times in the first half with both teams shooting nearly 50 percent from the field. Jamie Lord-Boles, who led all scorers with a double-double (22 points and 14 rebounds), scored 13 second half points to provide much of the spark for the Lady Wildcats. Lacey Blau and Alex Guiton had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Despite the loss, Verressa Gaston poured through 17 for the Lady Reds. Gaston, a Fort Gibson, Okla. sophomore, was four-of-six in the first half, but saw her average drop considerably in the last period by hitting just four-of-12. Northeastern State will be idle this week to take final examinations before embarking on its trek to Honolulu, Hawaii, on Sunday. Busson, Lady Reds Stun Angelo State (12-8-05) SAN ANGELO, Texas --- Cara Busson scored a career-high 22 points and Northeastern State rolled to a 66-54 upset victory over 17th-ranked Angelo State in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at the Junnell Center Thursday night.NSU, which has won six of its past seven games, improved to 6-2 overall, while the Rambelles fell to 6-2 as well. Busson, a 5-8 senior guard, entered the game with only 22 points for the year. She matched her season total on eight-of-13 shooting and was five-of-seven from the charity stripe to pace the Lady Reds. Assistant coach Matt Cole said Busson's performance was very impressive. "Angelo State decided not to guard Cara," said Cole from his cell phone after the victory. "ASU's strategy was to use another person to double team our post players and Cara shot a lot of layups. We did a great job of recognizing what they (ASU) were trying to do and this was a great win for us." Northeastern State trailed only once, 5-4, before putting the game on cruise control. After leading 32-26 at halftime, the Lady Reds went on a 7-0 run to start the final half to build a 39-27 advantage with 16:45 to go. Katrina Webb's layup at the 4:51 mark gave NSU its largest lead of the game at 60-44 and ASU got no closer than nine points twice, 61-52 and 63-54, before Northeastern closed out the game with three free throws for the final outcome. NSU shot a season-high 52.1 percent from the field, hitting 25-of-48 field goals. Busson's 22 led all scorers, while Webb chipped in 15, Verressa Gaston added 13 and Wendy Fehrenbach netted 11. Ashley King's 16 points paced Angelo State. Northeastern State will continue its LSC crossover road swing on Saturday when it meets Abilene Christian at 2 p.m. NOTES: Northeastern State left Tahlequah at 8 a.m. Wednesday, but did not arrive at its hotel in San Angelo until well after midnight due to icy weather conditions in northern Texas .... Busson is the career leader in assists and added three to her total on Thursday night ... Busson now has 355 assists in her career ... Busson also picked up a season-high four steals and the Lady Reds had seven thefts in the contest ... Angelo State lost for only the seventh time since the Junnell Center at Stephens Arena was constructed in 2002 ... NSU did not score a field goal over the final 4:51, but was six-of-nine at the free throw line. Shooting Woes End Lady Reds Streak (12-3-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State's five-game winning streak came to a screeching halt Saturday as Texas Woman posted a 58-53 Lone Star crossover win over the Lady Reds at Dobbins Field House.NSU fell to 5-2 on the year, while the Pioneers improved to 4-1. The Lady Reds were sluggish from the onset and managed just 32 percent field goal shooting for the day. NSU was 18-of-56 from the floor and just six-of-25 in the first half. TWU, which trailed by as many as seven, 30-23 with 15:27 to go, found their "go-to" player in Courtney Colmer in the last half. Colmer hit four consecutive treys to help the Pioneers open up a 46-40 cushion with 4:10 left. Colmer finished with 16 points, 14 of those coming in the final 20 minutes. The Lady Reds battled back, though, with a trifecta from Wendy Fehrenbach, a Verressa Gaston basket and Charlotte Dikeman's three-pointer to trail 49-48 at the 1:30 mark. However, that's as close as NSU would get as TWU sank six consecutive free throws down the stretch to preserve the win. Gaston led the Lady Reds with 15 pionts and Fehrenbach added 14. Margaret Wimbish paced Texas Woman's with 17 and seven rebounds. Northeastern State will continue LSC crossover play next week at Angelo State on Dec. 8 and at Abilene Christian on Dec. 10 before leaving later in the month for the Hoop-N-Surf Class in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hot First Half Sparks Lady Reds (12-1-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Monica Atilio scored 16 points in the first half as Northeastern State claimed a 57-49 Lone Star Conference crossover victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville at Dobbins Field House Thursday night.NSU won its fifth straight game and improved to 5-1 overall. A&M-Kingsville fell to 2-2. Atilio came off the bench to spark a ferocious Lady Reds run that turned a 6-all tie into a 28-13 NSU cushion late in the period. Atilio's streak began when she got a steal and drained the first of four consecutive three-point field goals. Until that point, Northeastern had begun the night 1-of-6 shooting, but finished by hitting 12-of-13 field goals during the stretch to take the commanding lead. However, as impressive as NSU's shooting prowess had been in the first 20 minutes, things changed dramatically as NSU made only eight-of-21 in the final frame. But, the Lady Reds turned the offensive productive over to sophomore post Verressa Gaston in the second half. Gaston scored 12 of her 16 points in the stanza. That, combined with a smothering defense that limited the Lady Javelinas to 38 percent shooting on the night, was enough for NSU to pull out the LSC crossover victory. Aasia Betts paced A&M-Kingsville with 14 points, but fouled out with over four minutes to go in the game. Monica Atilio's three-point field goal was followed by Webb's layup off a perfect Dikeman assist to give NSU a 63-54 lead and NSU pushed its lead back to double figures when Dikeman converted a three-point play off a bucket-and-one with 2:33 to go. Randle led Central Arkansas with 23 points, while Renita Dobbins had 15 and Jamie Boone 10. NSU held a 42-39 rebounding lead. Cara Busson dished out five assists for the Lady Reds.
