Skyhawks Trip Redmen in Soccer Regional (11-11-04) SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Fort Lewis College used its speed and quickness to eliminate Northeastern State, 2-1, in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Soccer Regional at Cardinal Field Thursday night. The Skyhawks (15-3-2) advanced to Saturday's championship match against No. 1-seeded Incarnate Word at 7 p.m. The Redmen had their season ended at 18-5. "We have nothing to be ashamed of. I am very proud of what we accomplished this season," said NSU head coach Charlie Mitchell. "We had a couple of chances in the first half that we didn't convert. Their front two players (Cole Sweetser and Ryan Brooks) were very good." John Cunliffe put FLC in front with an unassisted goal in the 16th minute as the Skyhawks scrambled for possession on the left side of the goal off a direct free kick. That was all the scoring either team could muster in the opening half. Sergio Salinas, the Southwest Soccer Conference offensive player of the year, had a goal waved off late in the first half when he was called offsides on a play that loomed large at the end for the Redmen. NSU countered early in the final period when Justin Brady drilled home a goal just 1:39 into the stanza. Jordan's Leach set up the goal with a marvelous cross to Brady 15 yards from the net. The two teams continued to battle for momentum over the next 20 minutes with neither getting a shot on goal. However, Brooks broke free and accepted a pass from Sweetser in front of the Redmen goal and Brooks put home the game-winner at the 68:03 mark for the Skyhawks. Northeastern had only one other scoring opportunity over the next 22 minutes, but Malvern Ntini's 20-yarder was blocked by a Skyhawk defender in the penalty box and FLC held on for the win. Despite the loss, Northeastern State still established a school record for wins in a season with 18. This year also marked the second consecutive Midwest regional berth for NSU. Redmen Fall in OT at SSC Championship (11-6-04) SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Zach Kinney's goal 3:12 into the first overtime lifted University of the Incarnate Word to a 2-1 victory over Northeastern State in the championship match of the inaugural Southwest Soccer Conference Tournament here Saturday night. The top-seeded Cardinals and No. 2-seeded NSU likely secured berths in next week's NCAA Midwest Regional. The three team field will be announced Monday by the NCAA. UIW and Fort Lewis (Colo.) were tied atop this week's Midwest Regional poll, while NSU was a solid third. Fort Lewis lost its opening round match of the Rocky Mountain Tournament on Thursday. NSU, 18-4, got a goal from Sergio Salinas in the 67th minute which tied the match at 1-all. Lubomir Bogdanov, who assisted on the game-winner, put UIW in front at the 23:26 mark and that stood for the remainder of the first half. NSU Ousts Midwestern State (11-04-04) SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Miguel Menduina had to wait to make his presence known to Midwestern State. Thursday afternoon, Menduina scored a goal and assisted on another as Northeastern State eliminated the Indians 2-1 in the semifinals of the Southwest Soccer Conference Tournament. The Redmen advanced to Saturday's championship match against either Incarnate Word or West Texas A&M. UIW and WTAMU played late Thursday night and the score was unavailable. Menduina, a senior forward from Bolivia and Oral Roberts transfer, missed the previous two meetings between NSU and Midwestern State with a hamstring injury. The results were a pair of Redmen losses, 3-0 and 3-1 earlier this season. However, Menduina's cross to Jordan Leach in the 63rd minute Thursday broke a scoreless tie to give Northeastern State a 1-0 lead. Just a few minutes later, Menduina scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick to put NSU up 2-0 at the 75:24 mark. Midwestern added its only tally of the match with 8:49 left when Ricardo Box scored an unassisted goal for the final 2-1 decision. The Redmen victory, though, was not quite that easy. According to head coach Charlie Mitchell, Midwestern State had two penalty kicks in the final half which could have severely damaged NSU's chances of advancing. Mitchell said the first PK hit off the cross bar and NSU goalkeeper, Michael Sylvester, scrambled for a save on the second to preserve the victory. Sylvester ended the match with four saves. MSU outshot the Redmen 19-to-11 in the physical encounter that had 30 fouls and five yellow cards. NSU had seven corner kicks and Midwestern State was called for two offsides infractions. WHAT'S NEXT FOR NORTHEASTERN STATE: In head-to-head meetings during the regular season, NSU beat West Texas A&M twice, 5-1 and 2-1 in overtime, and split with Incarnate Word, losing 5-2 and winning 4-1. Northeastern State's victory should solidify its Midwest Regional standings and regardless of Saturday's outcome, NSU should qualify for next week's NCAA Midwest Regional. Redmen Drop Home Finale (10-31-04) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Midwestern State took advantage of sloppy field conditions and Northeastern State miscues to upend the Redmen 3-1 in a Southwestern Soccer Conference match here Sunday.NSU lost for the first time in 13 matches and had its record fall to 17-3-0 overall and 11-3 in league play. MSU improved to 12-5-0 and 9-4-0 and beat NSU in both meetings this season. Approximately two inches of rainfall over a 12 hour period turned the turf at the NSU Soccer Complex into what may best be described as a bog. Midwestern State scored a pair of goals in the opening half, then relied on its defense to earn the victory. The Indians got a pair of goals from Elliott GAllagher in the 27th and 37th minutes to construct an insurmountable 2-0 advantage. Chad Rakestraw added an insurance goal for MSU in the 52nd minute and NSU's lone tally came on a Dustin Lollis header at the 64:05 mark. Neither team produced much in the way of offense --- MSU had 13 shots and NSU had 11. Northeastern State will open play at the Southwest Soccer Conference Postseason Tournament later this week as the No. 2 seed. The Redmen will meet West Texas A&M on Thursday in the opening round. Incarnate Word, the No. 1 seed and host of the event, will take on Midwestern State in the other semifinal match. Game times have yet to be determined.
