Hurricane Slip Past Redmen in Overtime (11-4-2005) TULSA, OKLA --- Northeastern State finished it's season this evening with a overtime loss to Division I Tulsa 3-2 at the Hurricane Soccer and Track stadium Friday evening.TU's Matt Wiley put the Golden Hurricane on the board in the 25th minute as he followed a teammate's missed shot and put the rebound in the back of the net. The Redmen answered right back in the 30th minute as Luccas Correa's fired a bullet pass goalkeeper past Tyrel Lacey to knot the match at 1-1. Both the Redmen and the Golden Hurricane struggled for much of the second half until Tulsa's Eric Defreitas scored off a deflection on a corner kick in the 77th minute to put TU up 2-1. Once again the Redmen answered, in the 87th minute Ludinei Filho scored his 14th goal of the year to tie the match at 2-2 and send it to overtime. The Golden Hurricane did not waste anytime, just three minutes into the extra frame, Eric Defreitas recorded his second goal of the game to give Tulsa the 3-2 victory. The Redmen finish the 2005 campaign with a 9-11, winning seven of its last 10 games. Senior Day Senior Scores Two; The Lawton (Lawton High School) senior, who ended his home career at NSU on Wednesday, went out in style by scoring a pair of goal to help the Redmen wallop Missouri Southern State 7-0 in a Southwest Soccer Conference match at the NSU Soccer Complex. Cleland, who has played in 41 games during his two-year Redmen career, scored NSU's second goal of the first half off a cross from Lucas Correa and Paul Marshall at the 29:11 mark. He added an unassisted goal in the 54th minute to put the Redmen comfortably in front at 4-0. Ludinei Filho also added two goals, while Correa had a goal and three assists in the rout. Ryan Harbour and Ryan Tanner added a score each for the Redmen, who improved to 9-10 overall and 7-7 in league play. NSU's goals came in spurts. Correa's 25-yard bullet beat MSSU keeper, Travis Haight, at 25:52 before Cleland's first goal came only 3:19 later. In the final half, which saw the Redmen score five times, Filho drilled home a shot off Correa's cross at 52:14 and Cleland followed up :59 later with his second score. Filho added another at 61:44, while Harbour converted a corner kick in the 79th minute and Tanner netted the final goal as the final half ended. Missouri Southern (5-14 and 3-11) was met with a fierce NSU defense for a majority of the match and only managed five shots adn three on goal. The Redmen tallied 18 shots, 13 on goal. Northeastern State will close out the season on Friday when it plays at Tulsa University in a game that was added just this week. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. at Skelly Stadium. Redmen Are Shutout In Austin (10-30-05) AUSTIN, Texas --- Northeastern State gave up three goals in the final half as St. Edward's shutout the Redmen 4-0 here Sunday afternoon in a Southwest Soccer Conference match.The Redmen fell to 8-10-0 overall and 6-7 in league play with their second consecutive loss, while SEU improved to 6-11-1. NSU was forced to play a man down after Jason Rogers received a red card with 3:36 to play in the first half. At the time of Rogers' ejection, the Redmen trailed just 1-0. However, SEU took advantage of the situation with a goal from Collin Mayo just 1:48 into the second stanza and T.J. Girouard tallied again just :39 later for a 3-0 cushion. Noor Jehangir put the game on ice in the 58th minute with the final goal. Each team had 14 shots, eight on goal, but SEU keepers, Chris Sanders and Scotty McNabb were credited with a combined eight saves. Northeastern State will wrap up the year on Wednesday, Nov. 2, when it host Missouri Southern at 3 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex. Redmen Fall at Midwestern (10-28-05) WICHITA FALLS, Texas --- Brandon Swartzendruber scored back-to-back goals in a 2:20 span to start the second half to help Midwestern State to a 4-1 Southwest Soccer Conference victory over Northeastern State here Friday evening.The loss dropped the Redmen to 6-6 in league play and 8-9 overall, while MSU improved to 10-3-2 and 8-1-2. NSU's Ludinei Filho, this week's SSC Offensive Player of the Week, tied the match in the 29th minute when he converted a Jared Cleland cross in front of the box for a 1-1 tie. The score remained that way the remainder of the half. In the second frame, Swartzendruber scored his first goal at the 49:16 mark, then provided a cushion for the Indians with a breakaway goal at 51:36. Jimmy Kruger, who assisted on Swartzendruber's first tally, ended the scoring in the 71st minute. Midwestern State was very offensive-minded with 27 shots on the night, compared to only 14 for the Redmen. NSU keeper, Jason Schulz, logged eight saves in a losing cause. Northeastern State will play at St. Edward's on Sunday before closing out the season at home on Nov. 2 by hosting Missouri Southern State. Both matches are SSC conference affairs. Back to top
Redmen Whip Greyhounds in Double Overtime (10-23-05) TAHLEQUAH, OKLA. --- Northeastern State's Lucus Correa scored in the 101st minute to give the Redmen a thrilling 2-1 victory over Eastern New Mexico at the NSU Soccer Complex this afternoon.The Redmen are 2-0 in overtimes games this season and have won six of the last seven to improve to 8-8 and 6-5 in Southwest Soccer Conference action. Eastern New Mexico's Rob Humphrey tallied the game's first goal just three minutes into the second half as his first shot was deflected by NSU goalkeeper Devon Murray and Humphrey converted the rebound to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 advantage. The Redmen answered back three minutes later as Ludinei Filho scored his 10th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. As both teams battled to the end of regulation and through the first overtime period, Lucas Correa put the ball in the back of the net one minute into the second overtime session. The Redmen will be on the road this week as it will travel to Midwestern State and St. Edwards before returning home on Nov. 2 to take on Missouri Southern. What a Difference a Minute Makes;
The Redmen, who have won five of their last six matches, improved to 7-8 overall and evened their league record at 5-5. WTAMU fell to 9-6 and 8-2. Filho took advantage of the PK after WTAMU's keeper, Shawn Carr, fouled Lucas Correa in the box at the 90:53 mark. Filho drilled home the game-winner on the far post, easily defeating Carr who guessed wrong and went to the near post. Carr and Raul Rodriguez received red cards and were ejected afterwards by referee Paul Scott. It was the finale in a game that was plagued by numerous fouls and cautions. Following a scoreless half, NSU took the lead when Filho rocketed a kick from 25 yards out in the 62nd minute and it appeared that would be all the Redmen might need. However, Josh Fender tied the match at the 82:21 mark when he was left alone in the box and finished off a beautiful cross from Rodriguez from just five yards away. Neither team seriously threatened the rest of the way forcing the extra session. The game was evenly played from a statistical standpoint. NSU held a 13-to-11 margin in shots and 7-4 on goal. Redmen keeper Jason Schulz logged three saves, while Carr had four. Northeastern State will continue LSC play on Sunday by hosting Eastern New Mexico at noon. Redmen Take Down Rattlers (10-16-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State found the offense it has been looking for in a 4-2 victory over St. Mary's this afternoon at the NSU Soccer Complex.The Redmen had four different players score goals in the win. Jared Cleland notched the first Redmen goal, his third of the year, 16 minutes into the first half as he took a cross from Ludinei Filho and headed into the net for an 1-0 advantage. Adam Douglas scored his first goal of the year ten minutes later as he headed in a Socrates Melo free kick past the goalie for the 2-0 lead. St. Mary's would cut the lead in half early in the second period as Aron Ruiz headed the ball past NSU goalkeeper Devon Murray to cut the lead to 2-1. The Rattlers had a chance to tie the game as Scott Kilpatrick's penalty kick failed to keep the Redmen in front 2-1. Northeastern added another goal Ludinei Filho scored on a corner to put the Redmen in front 3-1 and add one more when Tyler Schwarz headed into the net for his first goal of the year to secure the victory. St. Mary's would score a goal late but it was not enough. The Redmen improve to 6-8 and 4-5 in Southwest Soccer Conference action. Cardinals Stifle Redmen (10-13-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla --- Northeastern State was shut out for the first time this season as the Cardinals of Incarnate Word got a Southwest Soccer Conference victory 3-0.Incarnate Word's Fernando Jorge put the Cardinals on the board first at the 33 minute mark in the first period as he chipped the ball over goalie Jason Schulz's outreached hands. The Redmen could never get on track on the afternoon and only managed three shots on goal. Late in the second period, Incarnate Word put the game away with a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. The Cardinals added another goal four minutes later to seal the up the victory. The Cardinals improve to 8-4-1 and 4-1-1 in SSC play, the Redmen fall to 5-8 and 3-3 in conference play. The Redmen will return to action this Sunday afternoon as it hosts St. Mary's University at 2:30 p.m. at the NSU Soccer Complex. In front of 150 fans at the NSU Soccer Complex, the Redmen played one of its best games of the year. Northeastern scored just eight minutes into the game as Ludinei (Lugie) Filho received a beautiful centering pass from Socrates Melo and deposited in the net for a 1-0 advantage. The held this lead until early in the second half when Lucas Carrea put the Redmen on top 2-0. Northeastern however gave up a goal late in the game as Kyle Sun had a free kick from the top of the box to cut the lead in half. Redmen Edge Greyhounds (9-25-05) PORTALES, N.M. --- Ludinei Filho scored the game's only goal on a 19-yard free kick in the 37th minute to propel Northeastern State to a 1-0 shutout over Eastern New Mexico in a Southwest Soccer Conference match here Sunday afternoon.The Redmen snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 3-7 overall and 3-4 in league play. ENMU fell to 2-8-1 and 1-6. Each team had seven shots on goal and NSU keepers Devon Murray and Jason Schulz combined to earn a split shutout. Murray played the first half and logged three saves, while Schulz came on in the final stanza to record four saves. Northeastern State will take a break from the rugged SSC schedule for a pair of non-conference matches. The Redmen will travel to Wichita, Kansas, to face Newman University on Friday, Sept. 30, before hosting Ouachita Baptist in Tahlequah on Oct. 14. Redmen Drop 5-3 Decision at St. Mary's (9-18-05) SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Ben Barling scored a pair of goals for St. Mary's (Texas) and the Rattlers held on for a 5-3 Southwest Soccer Conference victory over the Redmen Sunday.Barling, one of just two subs used by St. Mary's in the match, broke a 2-2 tie with goals at the 52:16 mark and in the 74th minute to put the Rattlers in front for good at 4-2. Lucas Correa, who also scored twice for the Redmen, brought NSU to within 4-3 in the 86th minute. However, Northeastern State would come no closer. Playing a man down when Paul Marshall received a red card, the result of his second yellow card of the match, with 5:43 to go, NSU keeper Devon Murray gave up a goal to Jonathan Gray with only 1:18 remaining in the match. Incarnate Word Edges Redmen (9-18-04) SAN ANTONIO, Texas --- Fernando Jorge scored an unassisted goal in the 81st minute to lift Incarnate Word to a 2-1 Southwest Soccer Conference win over visiting Northeastern State here Friday night. Jorge also netted UIW's other goal with 2:02 left in the opening period.Lucas Correa scored NSU's only goal of the evening on an unassisted tally at the 64:53 mark. Redmen Roll past Hilltoppers (9-10-05) Tahlequah, Okla. ---- Northeastern State found new life this afternoon with an impressive 2-1 victory over St. Edwards.Unlike in the other matches, the Redmen went on the offensive against the Hilltoppers, launching 19 shots at goalie Chris Sanders. Tahlequah native Heath Ritzhaup scored his first goal of the year at the 1:30 mark in the first half as he took a crossing pass from Ryan Tanner to give the Redmen the 1-0 advantage at the half. St. Edwards quickly tie the game in the second half when Noor Jehangir put a rebound in the back of the net to knot the game at 1-1. Northeastern's Lucas Correa took a cross from Richard McCreary with 10:35 remaining to put the Redmen up for good 2-1. The Redmen improved to 2-4 with the victory and 2-1 in SSC play. St. Edwards falls to 1-4 and 1-1 in SSC action. Northeastern will begin a five game road trip and will not return home until Oct. 11 against Ouachita Baptist University. Redmen Lose Conference Opener to Midwestern (9-9-05) Tahlequah, Okla ---- Midwestern State used a sufficating defensive effort to pull out a 2-1 victory over the Redmen in Southwest Soccer Conference action this afternoon.Midwestern's Jimmy Krueger broke a scorless tie late in the first half with a goal from just 10 yards out into a open net as Redmen goalie Jason Schulz came out of the box to make a save but failed. Midwestern struck again early in the second half as Keegan Hudson's chip shot from 20 yards out found the back of the net to give the Indians a 2-0 lead. Northeastern could not manage to get any offense going until late in the game as Andrew Flusche crossing pass found the head of Jared Cleland to cut the Midwestern lead to 2-1. The Midwestern defense took over from that point on as the Redmen never got another scoring opportunitiy. The loss drops the Redmen 1-4 on the year and 0-1 in SSC play. Midwestern improves to 3-0 and 1-0 in SSC action. The next action for the Redmen will on Sunday Sept. 11 at 1:00 p.m. as it will entertain St Edwards. Thunderwolves Survive Late Redmen Charge (8-28-2005) Tahlequah, Okla---- Colorado State-Pueblo with stood a fierce Redmen charge in the second half to capture a 2-1 victory here Sunday afternoon.The Redmen missed many scoring opportunities in the second half as it's shots could not find thier way into the net. CSU-Pueblo found the net twice in the first half, as Mark Thimm scored the first Thunderwolve goal just 10 minutes into the contest. Adam Arvizo scored the second goal midway thru the first half to give CSU-Pueblo a 2-0 lead. The Redmen found itself back in the game when Ludinei Filho was fould in the box and converted a penalty kick for his second goal of the year to cut the lead in half 2-1. The Thunderwolves defense came up big down the stretch. Backup goalie Mike Baker faced nine Redmen shots in that second and had one save. Redmen goalie Hason Schulz faced nine shots and had three saves on the afternoon. Both teams kept the referee's busy as there was a total of 33 fouls called, CSU-Pueblo was whistled for 20 and Northeastern committed 13. Seahawks Whip Redmen in Opener (8-25-2005) Tahlequah, Okla--- In a game that matched two teams ranked in the top 25, turned out to be a one sided affair.Ft.Lewis's Jonathan Boyer scored an unassisted goal off of a deflection to give the Seahawks a quick 1-0 lead. Bernardo Costa took advantage of a mental mistake by the Redmen to push the lead to 2-0. Northeastern's lone highlight on the afternoon came when Ludinei Filho scored the lone goal for the Redmen off a penalty kick midway through the first half to cut the lead to 2-1. Ft. Lewis's Cole Sweetser added another goal right before the half for the 3-1 advantage. The second half was all Seahawks as frustation built for the Redmen. John Cunliffe scored twice to put Ft.Lewis on top 5-1. Northeastern only managed two shots on goal as the Seahawks pelted Redmen goalies with 10 shots on goal. Ft.
