NORTHEASTERN MEN WIN FIRST-EVER LSC GOLF TITLE (4/19/05) ROANOKE, Texas -- Northeastern State claimed its first-ever Lone Star Conference men's golf championship here Tuesday as the Redmen posted yet another steady performance to edge Cameron in an epic finish at Trophy Club Country Club. The Redmen, who had been painfully close to winning a conference title several times in the past five years, ended its string of frusterating finishes in 2005 as NSU found the winning formula by posting a three-round total of 867, which was just three-over-par after 54 holes on the par-72 Hogan Course at TCCC. The total was three strokes better than defending champion Cameron, which had a strong start to Tuesday's round and actually led throughout much of the day. Northeastern closed out the tournament with an even-par 288 on Tuesday, while Cameron gave away several strokes down the stretch to finish at 290 for the day and six-over 870 for the tournament. East Central finished third at 880, while Southwestern Oklahoma was fourth at 884 and Central Oklahoma fifth at 889. Rounding out the field were West Texas A&M in sixth place at 901, Abilene Christian in seventh at 915 and Texas A&M-Commerce in eighth at 917. NSU was steady throughout the tournament, opening with a one-under 287 on Monday morning before shooting a four-over 292 on Monday afternoon. The even-par 288 on Tuesday gave the Redmen two rounds under 290. Cameron's 289 on Monday afternoon was the only other sub-290 effort in the tournament. East Central's Andrew Bishop finished as inidividual medalist in the tournament, holing out from 110 yards for an eagle on the par-4 third hole en route to a closing round of three-under 69. He finished with a three-round total of 213, good for three-under-par and a one-stroke victory over Cameron's Owen Mahaffey and NSU's Kevin King, who finished at 214. Mahaffey carded a 73 on Tuesday, while King had 71. Bishop, Mahaffey and King were joined on the five-man LSC All-Tournament Team by NSU's Brian Ward and Abilene Christian's Kyle Byerly, who both closed with one-under 71s to finish the tournament at 216. NSU's men will receive the LSC's automatic bid into the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championships, which are set for May 2-4 in Valdosta, Ga. Redmen Falter on Final Day at Oak Hills (3-22-04)
ADA, Okla. --- Brad Risenhoover's runner-up
finish in the medalist race wasn't enough for Northeastern State defend
its title at the ECU Oak Hills Spring Classic here Tuesday.
Redmen Lead The Pack After 2 Rounds (3/21/05) ADA, Okla. --– Northeastern State’s Brad Risenhoover and Central Oklahoma’s Chris Hutson each fired a first round, even-par 72 and a second round, 1-under 71 to lead the East Central University Oak Hills Spring Golf Classic Monday at the Oak Hills Country Club.Risenhoover’s effort propelled NSU to a two-stroke lead in the team standings over UCO and host ECU. The Redmen posted a team score of 588 after Monday’s two first rounds while the Bronchos and host Tigers are each at 590. "We hit the ball well but we didn't capitalize on our short game or we would have had a very good day," said head coach Scott Varner, "yet we're still leading UCO and ECU by two shots. I was proud of the way we played and competed." NSU is the defending champion at the event, winning in 2004. Varner said the final round, which pits NSU, UCO and ECU playing together should be a classic. "We're really going to have to compete on Tuesday to win the event," he said. "This is good for our young players to be in this position so I'm anxious to see how it goes." Seminole State College is in fourth at 596, followed by Missouri Southern (613), St. Mary’s, Texas (622), Lincoln University (633) and Texas A&M-Commerce (636). The third and final round is set to begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament began with a shotgun start about an hour late due to early morning severe weather. Risenhoover birdied holes 1, 8, 13 and 18 in the opening round and holes 1, 4, 7, 14 and 17 in the second round. Hutson birdied holes 1, 4, 8 and 17 to open play and holes 1, 12, 13 to go along with an eagle on No. 4 in the second round. ECU’s Kyle Kates and Andrew Bishop are in third and fourth with a two-round score of 144 and 145, respectively. Kates opened up with a 1-under 71 before finishing with a 1-over 73. Bishop had the best first round of the day, firing a 4-under 68, but he slumped to a 77 in the next round. Seminole State’s Jared Holt was in a three-way tie for fifth with UCO’s Matt Ellis and Todd Dayton at 146. ECU Oak Hills Spring Classic Oak Hills C.C.
