Redmen Lead NSU Classic (9-26-05)

MUSKOGEE, Okla. --- Northeastern State holds on to a one shot lead heading into Tuesday final round of the NSU Golf Classic at the Muskogee Country Club.

The Redmen fired rounds of 276 and 285 during Monday's opening two rounds and was able to keep a slim margin over Washburn with 18 holes to play. NSU's 276, a new school record of eight-under-par, came in the first round with Brian Ward's 69 providing much of the punch.      Western New Mexico (580) is third, followed by St. Mary's (584) and Southwestern Oklahoma State (589).

Washburn's Matt Ewald carded rounds of 70 and 65 for the lead in the individual medalist race, one shot ahead of NSU's Ward. Fellow Redman, Brad Risenhoover, is tied for third at 140 and Chris Curran is seventh at 142.

Play will conclude on Tuesday on the 6,665-yard, par 71 Perry Maxwell course beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Ward Nabs Medalist Honors at The Territory (9-20-05)

DUNCAN, Okla. --- Northeastern State's Brian Ward captured the individual championship at the Territory Classic, hosted by Cameron University on Monday and Tuesday.

Ward fired a 36-hole total of 141 (72, 69) to win medalist honors by two shots over Texas Wesleyan's Lance Vasquez and Tyler Duncan of St. Edward's.

The news wasn't so good for the Redmen as a team, however. NSU, playing without its No. 1 player, Brad Risenhoover, finished in fifth place overall with scores of 308 and 297. Risenhoover missed the event when his wife went into labor on Monday forcing NSU to count all four scores without throwing out the high round.

St. Edward's claimed the team title by five shots over Texas Wesleyan and 10 better than host Cameron.
