Central Oklahoma Hoists Presidents Cup (11-06-04) Tahlequah, OK --- The Northeastern State Redmen seniors played the final game of their careers tonight in Doc Wadley stadium in front of a crowd of 3,200. Unforunately, the Redmen couldn't pull out a victory on Senior Day.The University of Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early 13-0 lead in the first half and never looked back, winning the game 25-7. Trey Crain began the scoring in the middle of the first quarter after picking up a Dustin Workman fumble at the NSU 31 yard line. The Redmen defense was very stingy in the first half though, as they didn't allow a touchdown by the Broncho offense. The struggles continued for the Redmen opening the second half. Replacement quarterback Porter Lacey, fumbled the football in and out of the endzone for a safety, giving the Broncho defense their second score of the game. The Redmen would bounce back later in the third quarter after going for it on fourth down. NSU faked a punt, and fullback Pat Gilbert took the snap 35 yards to the UCO 18 yard line. From there, a combined effort from De'Angelo Green and Gilbert lead the Redmen inside the 2 yard line. Gilbert, with some very poewrful running, would push himself into the endzone from the two and the 2:50 mark of the third quarter. NSU was able to hold the Bronchos on their next three possessions before UCO tailback Kevin McKenzie ran for 53 yards in the drive, ending with a 21 yard touchdown scamper. A late field goal gave the game it's final score of 25-7 and the Presidents Cup victory to Central Oklahoma. The Redmen end their season at 0-10, their first winless season since 1941. Back to top
Redmen Fall at Southwestern (10-30-04) WEATHERFORD, Okla. --- Northeastern State's comeback bid fell short Saturday as the Redmen fell, 21-16, at Southwestern Oklahoma State at Milam Stadium.NSU fell to 0-9 overall and 0-4 in Lone Star North Division play, while the Bulldogs earned their first win of the season to go to 1-8 and 1-3. The Redmen had several chances in the final half to pick up the victory, but failed to capitalize. Dustin Workman engineered an 80-yard, 16-play drive and scored from two yards out to bring the Redmen to within 21-16 with 1:04 to play. However, NSU's onside kick was unsuccessful and SWOSU ran out the clock to preserve the victory. Jimmy Jenkins' five-yard run put SWOSU in the lead for good on its opening possession of the game. The Bulldogs covered 73 yards in six plays. Brandon Ishem's 192 all-purpose yards (118 rushing and 74 receiving) wasn't enough for the Redmen. Ishem, a junior from Tulsa, hauled in a 68-yard touchdown strike to bring NSU to within 7-6 early in the second quarter. But, Ishem was called for unsportsmanlike conduct when he dove into the end zone. Brett Sowers missed the PAT from 37 yards away after the penalty was assessed and Southwestern retained its lead. SWOSU added a five-yard scoring strike from quarterback Beau Dodson to tight end Aaron Blundell with 4:44 to play in the second quarter for a 14-6 lead at intermission. The touchdown drive came after NSU's goalline stand just one series earlier when Travis Creech held Dodson out of the endzone on fourth-and-goal from the one. Early in the third, James Sadler got behind the Redmen secondary for a 65-yard TD reception from Dodson for a 21-6 Bulldog advantage. Landon Lucas blocked a Southwestern punt and the Redmen took over at the 18 yard line. After Brandon Ishem ran for 12 yards on first down, the Redmen had to settle for a Sowers 22-yard field goal for a 21-9 deficit. One series later, the Redmen stuffed Southwestern's offense, forcing a punt, and NSU took over at the Bulldog 42. Workman took the Redmen to a first-and-goal at the nine, but was intercepted by Sean Cole on the next play, to squander a potential scoring opportunity. Southwestern had 333 total yards, compared to 295 for NSU. The Redmen defense limited the Bulldogs to just 36 rushing yards, but gave up 245 through the air. Jason Myers led NSU with 11 tackles. Northeastern State will host Central Oklahoma on Saturday in the season finale. Game time at Doc Wadley Stadium in Tahlequah is slated for 2 p.m. Back to top

Redmen Homecoming Spoiled by Rams (10-16-04) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- A crucial and controversial call with :17 left helped Angelo State hold for a 21-16 win over Northeastern State at Doc Wadley Stadium here Saturday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference Crossover game.Officials ruled Brandon Mallow's apparent go-ahead touchdown catch incomplete when Mallow did not have control of the football when his foot hit the end line. The end result saw NSU fall to 0-7, while Angelo got its first win to improve to 1-7. The Redmen had their chances. In fact, NSU quarterback Dustin Workman had run for enough a first down just one play previous. But, the play was called back on an offensive holding penalty. So, on fourth-and-12, Workman's desperation pass almost found the mark. ASU, which controlled the first half, was held scoreless in the final 30 minutes much to the stellar defensive play of senior defensive end Travis Creech. The Live Oak, Fla., product sacked Angelo State quarterback Trey Weishuhn on three consecutive plays in the fourth stanza. Creech finished with eight tackles, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. The Rams struck early when Wesley Lambert lumbered in from 11 yards out when Workman fumbled deep in Redmen territory. Bryan Hepler's PAT put Angelo State up 7-0 with only 1:27 gone. NSU tied the game with 2:01 left in the first when Josh Richey caught a 14-yard TD pass from Workman to cap a 73-yard, 11-play drive. However, the deadlock was short-lived when Weishuhn hooked up with Travis House on a 78-yard TD pass on the Rams' next possession, and ASU never trailed again. Angelo State picked up another TD midway through the second period when Alexis Cooper hauled in a 12-yard pass from Weishuhn for a 21-7 advantage. Asa Poteete's six-yard TD reception with 2:27 left before halftime cut the Redmen deficit to 21-13 after Brett Sowers' PAT attempt was blocked by Dennis Lee. In the final half, Sowers kicked an 18-yard field goal for a 21-16 ASU lead. Brandon Ishem, who led all rushers with 139 yards on 14 carries, scampered 71 yards to the Ram 3-yard line. However, NSU could not convert the run into a TD, and head coach John Horner elected to take the field goal with 7:10 left in the third. Northeastern State had 377 total yards, 222 of those coming on the ground. Workman was 13-of-24 for 155 yards passing and two TDs, but was sacked four times. Angelo State ran up 302 total yards (200 passing and 102 rushing). Weishuhn led the Rams with 35 yards on 15 carries and he was 13-of-27 with one interceptions and two touchdowns. Blocked Field Goal Dooms Redmen (9-25-04) ADA, Okla. --- Eli Kieslich returned a blocked field goal 79 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter and East Central hung on for a 24-13 victory over Northeastern State in the Lone Star Conference North opener for both schools at Norris Field here Saturday night. The loss kept the Redmen winless at 0-5 and 0-1, while ECU improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0. Landon Pratt blocked Brett Sowers' 31-yard attempt midway through the final period and Kieslich raced down the ECU sideline untouched. The TD erased NSU's momentum and the field goal would have brought the Redmen to within 17-16 at that point. Northeastern turned the game around with an impressive second half showing. King Bennett, who led all rushers with 101 yards, capped a 70-yard drive with a 29-yard run to give the Tigers a 14-3 advantage with 6:23 showing in the third quarter. The drive covered 92 yards in only four plays. Brad Gresham's 42-yard field goal put the Tigers up, 17-10, but Sowers, hit his second field goal of the night, a 44-yarder, to bring NSU back to 17-13 early in the fourth period. Sowers, who had not converted a field goal in four tries this season, had a career-best 48-yarder in the second quarter.
