Bronchos Stampede Redmen

EDMOND, OKLA. --- Central Oklahoma used a stiffling defense and a powerful running attack to secure a Presidents Cup victory 37-10 over Northeastern State at Wantland Stadium here Saturday evening .

The Redmen end the year 2-8 and 2-3 in North Division play, the Bronchos finish 3-7 and 3-2.

Central Oklahoma got on the board on their first possesion as place kicker Jason Dixon converted a 40-yard field to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.

Northeastern State's Brandon Ishem finished off a eight play 56 yard drive with a five yard touchdown run to give the Redmen a brief 7-3 lead.

UCO was not finish, Allgood engineered a 12 play 49 yard drive as Dixon split the uprights with a 31 yard field goal as time experiod in the first half to put UCO ahead 20-10 .

The third quarter was not kind to the Redmen, it's average field position was their own 17 yardline. Northeastern also failed to convert a first down in the quarter.

UCO put the game away in the third, as Dixon connected on his third field goal of the evening from 23 yards out to extend the lead to 23-10. The Broncho defense held and force a Redmen punt with just a 1:44 left in the third. UCO needed only one play to score as Cedric Jones caught a pass from Allgood and then found Jared Meers wide open behind the Redmen Secondary for a Broncho touchdown that pushed the lead to 30-10.

UCO's Kevin McKenzie added a fourth quarter touchdown run to put Central Oklahoma ahead 37-10.

In light of the disappointing loss, Brandon Ishem finished his senior year with 1,033, becoming the first NSU running back to run for over a thousand yards, since Carlton Boo back in 1999. The loss dropped the Redmen to fourth place in the North Divison.

Redmen Leash The Dawgs;
...With Four Seconds to Spare (10-29-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Dominique Wadley provided enough spark with his 63 yard punt return for a touchdown for Northeastern State to hold off Southwestern Oklahoma State, 17-13, in a bizarre Lone Star Conference North Division game at Doc Wadley Stadium Saturday afternoon.

But, the decision was left in the balance until the bitter end. Literally.

Redmen linebacker, Kevin Christian, batted away Steve Day's pass attempt in the NSU endzone on the game's final play to help preserve the victory. Christian's heroics staved off a serious SWOSU comeback bid that started at the Bulldog 15 yardline and ended at the Redmen 14. During the drive, Southwestern converted two fourth downs, NSU was flagged twice for pass interference late in the drive and normally sure-handed Bulldog receiver Danny Howard's dropped pass at the Redmen three.

The end couldn't have been scripted any better between two teams who were fighting to stay out of the LSC North cellar. The Redmen succeeded by improving to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in LSC action, while SWOSU, which won its season opener at Oklahoma Panhandle State, fell to 1-9 overall and 0-4 in league play.

Wadley, no relation to D.M. Doc Wadley for whom NSU's stadium is named, brought the crowd of 3,800 to life with a brilliant touchdown off a punt with 4:04 to play. The junior took the punt at NSU's 37 and broke down the Southwestern boundary where he spun and found clear sailing until he broke another tackle at the Bulldog five yard line. Brett Sowers' PAT put the Redmen in front for good at 17-13.

Rusty Voight booted a pair of field goals, one from 29 yards in the first quarter and a 20-yarder in the second, as SWOSU took a 6-3 lead into halftime. Sowers kicked a 43-yarder with 4:05 left in the first for NSU's only points in the half.

The Redmen took a 10-6 advantage near the end of the third quarter when Dustin Workman found Jarrett Byers behind the Southwestern secondary for an 86-yard TD reception.

However, the 'Dawgs retook the lead midway through the fourth period when tight end Chris Craig capped a 39-yard drive with his 14-yard touchdown reception from Day and SWOSU led 13-10.

That set the stage for Wadley's game-breaker and Christian's game-saving PBU.

Southwestern racked up 394 yards, compared to 248 for the Redmen. The Bulldogs held NSU's Brandon Ishem to just 66 yards on the ground, but Byers caught six passes for 146 yards.

Howard hauled in 12 catches for the Bulldogs for 248 yards.

Northeastern State will close out the 2005 campaign on the road next Saturday when it meets rival Central Oklahoma, also 2-7 overall, in the annual President's Cup. Kickoff at Wantland Stadium in Edmond is slated for 6:00 p.m.

Lions Roar Past Redmen (10-22-05)

COMMERCE, Texas --- Texas A&M-Commerce had a pair of runningback eclipse the century mark as the Lions celebrated homecoming with a 31-10 victory over Northeastern State at Memorial Stadium here Saturday afternoon.

The Redmen fell to 1-7 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star Conference North Division play, while TAMUC improved to 4-4 and 3-1 in league play.

Cliff Edwards and Roger Daley combined for 286 rushing yards for A&M Commerce and three touchdowns. Daley, who had 120 yards on 16 carries, scampered 91 yards for a TD scamper to put the Lion in front for good ealry in the second quarter. Edwards led all rushers with 166 on 16 totes, scored twice, including a 63-yard TD in the final stanza.

Early, it appeared Northeastern might reverse it recent fortunes when Dominique Wadley hooked up with Jarrett Byers on a 79-yard rainbow on the game's second play from scrimmage for a 7-0 NSU advantage. The Lions coughed up the ball on their first offensive play and NSU took over at the AM-C 23. However, quarterback Dustin Workman was sacked on third down and a bad snap on an attempted field goal gave the ball back to the Lions.

NSU drove deep into TAMUC territory twice in the second period, but again came away without points.

Kyle Westerberg blasted in from a yard away with 2:15 to go in the first, Daley's 91-yard TD came at 13:58 and Ha'a Bento booted a 32-yard field goal with :13 left as the Lions built a 17-7 cushion at halftime.

Brett Sowers chipped in an 18-yard field goal after the Redmen had driven to the A&M-Commerce 1-yard line midway through the third to bring NSU to within 17-10. However, Edwards put momentum back on the side of the Lions with a 35-yard jaunt to paydirt with 3:37 left in the third and tallied again, this time from 63 yards out, for the final outcome.

Brandon Ishem, who was not expected to play, ran for 125 yards on 25 carries. The senior now has 875 yards on the year. Jarrett Byers caught eight passes for 136 yards, while reserve tight end, Nate Ford, hauled in seven receptions for 59 yards.

Northeastern State will host Southwestern Oklahoma State next Saturday at 3:30 on Senior Day at Doc Wadley Stadium.

Angelo State "Rams" Redmen

SAN ANGELO, Texas --- Angelo State broke open a close game with 35 unanswered points to throttle Northeastern State, 49-20, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at San Angelo Stadium Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Redmen to 1-6 overall, while ASU improved to 7-1.

Northeastern battled the Rams to a scoreless deadlock through the first quarter before ASU's Justin Carter hauled in an 11-yard touchdown pass from Trey Weishuhn with 13:12 to go in the first half.

However, the Redmen answered with a seven-play, 56-yard drive capped by Nate Ford's one-yard TD reception on the very next series to knot the affair at 7-all.

Weishuhn, however, ignited the homecoming crowd of 10,000 with a 28-yard screen pass to Kyle Fox midway through the stanza for a 14-7 Angelo State advantage, then put momentum securely on the side of the Rams on the final play of the half to doom the Redmen.

It appeared NSU was headed for another game-tying score just before intermission when the Redmen drove to the ASU 12. But, the Rams' defense sacked NSU on the next three plays and Brett Sowers' 48-yard field goal sailed wide left with :25 to go.

Weishuhn drove the Rams to the NSU 43 and with no time remaining, his "Hail Mary" pass was batted by tight end Justin Carter into the waiting arms of receiver Eric Woods for a 21-7 Angelo lead.

In the third quarter, Daniel Thomas capped an 80-yard drive with a nine-yard run, but ASU put the game out of reach with back-to-back TDs early in the fourth on a Fox 8-yard scamper and Jason Neyland's two-yard run for a 42-7 cushion.

NSU scored twice late in the game on Jarrett Byers' 46-yard reception from Dustin Workman and Matt Steel's two-yard catch. Steel's score was set up after Dominique Wadley returned a kickoff 89 yards to the Angelo two yard line.

Fox led all rushers with 104 yards on 10 carries, while Thomas added 88 and Alexis Cooper tacked on 89. Angelo State logged 253 yards on the ground and Weishuhn was 13-of-23 passing for 211 yards and three scores.

Domingo Codner, who played in place of NSU's leading ground-gainer, Brandon Ishem, had 88 yards. Workman was 15-of-28 for 224 yards, three touchdowns, but tossed a pair of interceptions.

Byers led all receivers with 125 yards on four catches, while Ford, who started at tight end for the injured Asa Poteete, had seven catches for 84 yards.

Northeastern State will resume Lone Star North Division action next Saturday when it plays at Texas A&M-Commerce at 2 p.m.

Southeastern Rattles Redmen (10-8-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Freshman quarterback Justin Pitrucha threw for a career-high 312 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southeastern Oklahoma State to a 49-32 triumph over Northeastern State at Doc Wadley Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Lone Star North loss dropped the Redmen to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Savages improved to 4-2 and 1-0.

Pitrucha completed 23-of-34 passes and had TD passes of 18 and eight yards, while running for another in the rout.

Northeastern State was its own worst enemy by tossing four interceptions and losing a fumble. The Redmen gave up an 87-yard kickoff return and a 62-yard fumble recovery for SOSU touchdowns and the Savages' go-ahead tally came after Norman Dawson returned a Dustin Workman interception 46 yards that set up Pitrucha's 11-yard scamper early in the second quarter.

NSU took the lead on DeAngelo Green's nine-yard run with 2:03 to play in the first period. However, the lead was short-lived when Shawn Lawrence returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards to knot the game at 7-all.

Following Pitrucha's 11-yard TD, Jeremie Berry hauled in an 18-yard touchdown reception, followed by Chris Hendrick's 62-yard fumble return and SOSU led 28-7 with 10:27 left in the first half.

Brandon Ishem, who left the game at halftime with what is believed to be a rib injury, scored from two yards out to pull the Redmen to within 28-14 at intermission. Prior to his departure, Ishem had accounted for 136 all-purpose yards, 73 of those coming on the ground.

It looked like NSU might take momentum early in the third stanza when Howard Crawford scooped up a Sean Cooper fumble and rambled 65 yards to make it 28-21. But, Cooper answered with a one-yard run to cap a 13-play, 70-yard drive with 5:50 left in the frame to put SOSU in front 35-21.

NSU added a 31-yard field goal from Brett Sowers midway through the third, Tim Holt retaliated for the Savages with an 8-yard TD reception from Pitrucha with 8:34 left, and Jarrett Byers pulled the Redmen to within 10, 42-32, on a 32-yard rainbow from Workman eith 8:18 left. The TD was set up after Keenan Webb returned a Southeastern kickoff 59 yards to the Savages' 32 yard line.

SOSU put the game away with :30 left when backup running back Drew Crawford sprinted 40 yards for the final score.

NSU outgained Southeastern 420 to 395 and limited the Savages to only 83 yards on the ground

Northeastern State will step out of LSC North action next week when it plays at Angelo State (7:00 p.m.). The Redmen return to league play on Oct. 21 at Texas A&M-Commerce (2:00 p.m.) before hosting its final home game of the year against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Oct. 29.

Redmen End Skid; Sowers Boots Tigers (9-24-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Homecoming on a college campus is special. At Northeastern State, Homecoming 2005 was even more special for the Redmen football team.

A less-than-healthy Brett Sowers booted a 24-yard field goal with 38 seconds remaining to lift the REdmen to a thrilling 16-14 win over East Central in the Lone Star North opener for both schools Saturday afternoon.

The Redmen, who snapped a 14-game losing skid dating back to the 2003 season finale, improved to 1-4 overall and 1-0 in league play, while ECU fell to 1-4 and 0-1. Ironically, NSU's last win came at the expense of the Tigers.

NSU finally overcame adversity late in the game to end the streak, which dated back to the 2003 season finale against the Tigers. However, it appeared bleak for Northeastern until the very end.

Down 14-7 late in the fourth stanza, the Redmen offense came to life with a pair of 80-yard drives to capture the win.

"I was proud of the way we played through the adversity and now the monkey is off our back," head coach John Horner told his team in the celebratory locker room. "I think the way we won this and broke the streak will be better for us in the long run because we had to fight to the very end."

On the first drive, Brandon Ishem accounted for 41 of the yards and Dustin Workman hooked up with Ellis Bruner on a pair of passes for 36 to put NSU at the ECU three. Workman then found tight end A.J. Lanier open in the end zone for the combo's second TD of the day. However, Sowers' PAT was blocked by Landon Pratt, and the Tigers held on to a 14-13 advantage.

To make things even more dramatic, Sowers sprained his knee on the PAT attempt and was assisted from the field, hindering NSU's comeback chances.

Following a botched on-side kick attempt, ECU took over at the Redmen 37 but was forced to punt on fourth down from midfield, giving NSU the ball for a final series at the 13.

Workman then engineered the Redmen into field goal range with an eight-play drive covering two minutes. On first down, Workman found wide receiver Cord Charvat for 22 yards to the 35 before Ishem caught a pass for 17 to the ECU 48.

On the next play, Workman hooked up with Bruner for a 26-yard gain and Ishem ran 13 yards to the Tiger 9.

With no timeouts remaining, Ishem lost five on first down before backup tailback DeAngelo Green rambled seven yards to the East Central seven. Workman grounded a pass to stop the clock to allow Sowers to return to the field for the game-winning effort.

After giving up 425 yards of rushing a week ago against Eastern New Mexico, the Tiger defense had another tough assignment in coralling Ishem, the LSC's second leading rusher. Ishem, who has run for a 100 yards in four of the first five games, had 132 yards on 19 carries and six receptions for 72 yards.

Normally, Horner does not present a game ball to players and he tried to break tradition after the ECU win. The intended recipient, Sowers, was quick to respecfully decline the gesture saying, "I think the game ball needs to go to the entire team. I had no part of the stop the defense made to give us the ball back and the offense driving 80 yards to put us in a position to win."

The Redmen agreed and congratulated the junior placekicker for the second time of the day.

The Redmen struck first with a three yard touchdown pass to A.J. Lanier with 3:12 left in the first half gave the Redmen a 7-0 lead at the break.

East Central quarterback Akeem Leviston found Brad Gresham on a 42 yard pass and catch to knot the game at 7-7 early in the third.

The Tigers took the lead late in the third period as King Bennett scored from a yard out to give East Central the 14-7 advantage.

Workman was 19-32 for 235 yards passing with no interceptions. The Redmen defense also limited the Tigers to a total of 236 yards, just 62 of those coming on the ground.

Northeastern State will take next week off and return to Doc Wadley Stadium on Oct. 8 for a 2:00 kickoff against Southeastern.

Ross Rolls Texans Past Redmen (9-17-05)

STEPHENVILLE, Texas --- Derrick Ross ran for 206 yards and caught two passes for 60 yards and a touchdown, to lead No. 19-ranked Tarleton State to a 34-25 victory over Northeastern State in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at Memorial Stadium Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Redmen to 0-4 on the year, while TSU remained unbeaten at 3-0.

Ross, who leads the LSC in rushing, continued to bruise the opposition with 26 carries. His effort overshadowed NSU's Brandon Ishem, second in the league rushing stats, who carried 19 times for 152 yards.

The Texans rolled up 507 total yards, while NSU had 435 in the offensive-minded affair. And, the verdict was not decided until Redmen quarterback Dustin Workman threw his second interception of the game with less than three minutes to play.

Jeremy Madkins scored twice for Tarleton State and hauled in 10 receptions for 147 yards on the night. His touchdown on TSU's opening possession gave the Texans the lead for good.

NSU answered with a Brett Sowers field goal to cut the margin to 7-3 on NSU's first offensive series. Sowers went on to boot four field goals and his 52-yarder (one yard shy of the school record) as time expired in the first half kept Northeastern State close, 17-16, at intermission.

The excitement continued in the final half. On NSU's first series of the third period, Tim Williams intercepted a Workman pass that skipped off Dominique Wadley's hands and Williams returned the interception 35 yards to put the Texans up 24-16.

Domingo Codner answered for the Redmen by capping a 67-yard drive with a four-yard touchdown run. After NSU's two-point PAT failed, TSU led 24-22.

Madkins hauled in an 18-yard TD reception with 4:10 to go in the third as Tarleton put up 14 points in the frame and took a 31-22 edge into the final 15 minutes.

Sowers's second 36-yard field goal of the game, came on the second play of the fourth quarter and NSU trailed 31-25.

Paul Williams kicked a 34-yarder with 8:56 left for the final points of the contest.

Tarleton quarterback, Richard Bartel, completed 18-of-26 passes for 308 yards and three TDs. Workman was 20-of-33 with two interceptions and one score. Ellis Bruner had eight receptions, 106 yards and one TD for NSU.

Northeastern State, who has played four nationally ranked opponents to begin the year, will host East Central in the Lone Star North opener for both schools next Saturday in NSU's annual homecoming game at 2 p.m. in Doc Wadley Stadium.

Northeastern Clawed by Wildcats in OT (9-10-05)

Tahlequah, Okla. ---- Rashon Myles 13 yard run in overtime completed the Wildcats comeback in a 20-14 victory this evening.

Northeastern jumped out to the quick lead in the first quarter when Dustin Workman hit Ellis Bruner on 28 yard pass for a touchdown to put the Redmen up 7-0. Brandon Ishem ran for 173 yards on 25 carries put the Redmen in front 14-0 on a 52 yard scamper in the second.

Northeastern's defense held Abilene's offense in check for three quarters holding Abilene to just 99 passing yards and 121 on the ground.

The Wildcats came alive in the fourth when Danieal Manning blocked a a blocked a punt that was picked up by Chris Morris and returned 20 yards which cut the Redmen lead to 14-7.

The Redmen could not muster any offensive rythum in the fourth, it was three and out on four of the five possesions in the final frame.

Abilene tied the game with just 1:10 left in the game on a controversal play as Wildcat qurterback Nick Bird hit Jerale Badon in the endzone, Bird had apparently threw the ball four yards beyond the line of scrimmage, it was not called because the umpire was taken out on the play.

Northeastern ran out the clock to end the half.

In overtime, the Redmen could not gain a yard on the first possesion and attemped a 36 yard field goal that sailed wide left.

Abilene needed only five plays to gain paydirt and complete the comeback and win 20-14.

Northeastern quarterback Dustin Workman threw for 128 yards and wide receiver Ellis Bruner had a career high with five catches for 71 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side, Kevin Christian led the way with 13 tackles and Broderick Mondy had 11 on the evening.

Northeastern's schedule does not get any easier as it will traval to Stephenville, Texas next Saturday to take on the Texans of Tarleton State, game time is set for 7:00 p.m..

Fourth Quarter Dooms Redmen (9-3-05)

KINGSVILLE, Texas --- Third-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and the Javelinas escaped upstart Northeastern State, 40-14, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Redmen to 0-2 on the year, while A&M-Kingsville improved to 2-0.

Leading 20-14 heading into the final stanza, the Javelinas capitalized on NSU miscues over the final 15 minutes to make the final outcome more lopsided than it actually was.

The melee began when Redmen quarterback Dustin Workman fumbled after being sacked in his end zone and TAMUK's Curt Jones recovered for a 26-14 advantage. The Javs then drove 60 yards in six plays on their next possession with Clint Bingham hauling in a 28-yard TD pass from Cory Miles for a 33-14 margin, and Anthony Bates returned a Workman interception 45 yards with 3:26 left for the final verdict.

Injuries also led, in part, to NSU's demise. The Redmen lost starting offensive guard Ross Strube in the first half and starting center Antwan Johnson left in the third quarter. Late in the game, Jarrett Byers, who had two catches for 132 yards and both NSU TDs, was taken from the field after an incomplete pass. All three were leg injuries and their status for next week is not known.

Miles, who completed 22-of-31 passes for 260 yards, snuck his way in from a yard out to give the Javelinas a 7-0 lead with 2:10 to go in the first quarter.

After Byers tied the game for the Redmen on a 53-yard reception on the opening play of the second quarter, Richard Hammond booted a 21-yard field goal and Deandrae Fillmore's 21-yard interception return with 6:50 left in the half put TAMUK in front for good at 17-7.

Byers' second TD reception was remarkable when he went airborne to get a Workman pass at the 30, then outran the Javlinas 79 yards to paydirt to bring the Redmen to within 17-14 at halftime.

The only scoring in the third was a Hammond 26-yard field goal.

Northeastern State will return home next weekend to host Abilene Christian in a 6:00 p.m. encounter at Doc Wadley Stadium. The Wildcats (0-1) lost to Central Oklahoma, 49-37, on Saturday in their season opener.

Late Heroics Not Enough;
Tech Spoils Redmen Opener (8-25-05)

TAHLEQUAH, OK --- For a moment it appeared Northeastern State's football fortunes were about to turn.

But, 14th-ranked Arkansas Tech made the Redmen wait at least one more week.

Jason Campbell engineered a 79-yard scoring drive in less than a minute for a heartbreaking 35-32 ATU win before 6,200 fans at Doc Wadley Stadium Thursday night. Tech's come-from-behind win came just 56 seconds after NSU had taken a 32-27 advantage on Jarrett Byers' 45-yard touchdown reception from Dustin Workman with only 1:50 to play. The feat was Byers' second long TD of the night. The sophomore wide receiver, who ended the game with 199 yards on eight catches, also scored on a 26-yarder in the second quarter.

However, the Redmen could not overcome four fumbles and seven penalties. ATU sacked Workman on the game's final two plays after NSU had advanced to the Wonder Boys' 44 yard line before time expired.

Northeastern outgained ATU by 120 yards (484 to 364) and tailback Brandon Ishem ran for a game-high 142 yards on 24 totes.

Brett Sowers kicked two field goals and his 43-yarder just 4:53 into the game put NSU in front, 3-0.

Arkansas Tech answered with a pair of TD runs, the first coming from from a yard out by Chris Johnson. Johnson's blast came after ATU's Tracey Stiger returned a punt to the Redmen one-yard line. Stiger scored on ATU's next possession on a seven-yard scamper for a 14-3 Wonder Boys' lead.

Sowers' 31-yard field goal brought the Redmen to within 14-6 midway through the second stanza before Byers and Domingo Codner scored back-to-back TDs to put NSU in front 18-14 with 3:45 left.

Chris Johnson put Tech in front at halftime with a seven-yard run with only 1:30 left.

Northeastern State will open Lone Star Conference crossover action next weekend when the Redmen journey to face 4th-rated Texas A&M-Kingsville at 7 p.m.
