Redmen Lose Another Squeaker (1-20-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Tarleton State hit four-of-six free throws in the final :30 and the Texans escaped upset-minded Northeastern State, 44-40, in a physical, low scoring Lone Star North Division game at Dobbins Field House Thursday night.NSU fell to 4-13 overall and remained winless in league play at 0-2. TSU improved to 12-4 and 1-0. Redmen freshman Josh Talley hit a circus trey with just :20 left to bring his team to within a basket, 41-39. Dustin Minter made the first charity toss for the Texans and missed the second, setting the stage for NSU to force overtime for the second time in as many home outings this season. However, Shad Roome was fouled after Talley's three-point attempt missed the mark and Roome made only one of the two free throws for a 42-40 TSU advantage. NSU chose to foul Cornell Jones on the inbounds play and Jones knocked down both free throws to seal the game with 5.5 seconds to go. Talley's 14 points paced the Redmen, while Shiloh Shores tossed in 10. LaShon Sheffield had 13 for Tarleton and Jones picked up 11. In a game legendary basketball coach Henry Iba would have loved, both teams' defensive efforts were outstanding. Tarleton managed only 35.7 percent of its shots from the field, compared to NSU's 31.7. The difference in the game, however, was at the free throw line where the Redmen struggled to a 55.6 percent effort. The Texans were 9-of-14 (64.3 percent). "I thought defensively we played well enough to win," said NSU head coach Larry Gipson. "Where we struggled was offensively. I told our team that we still don't understand the importance of critical every possession is." Case in point was Sheffield's driving layup at the buzzer that ended the first half to put Tarleton up 18-15 at the break. The Redmen came out in the second half and grabbed a five point lead at the 10:33 mark, but the Bronchos went on a 12-0 run to go up by seven and never looked back to seal the victory. Redmen Fall in LSC Crossover Finale (1-15-05) TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State missed its first 15 shots of the game and Midwestern State used the 17-point performance of Jay January to post a 67-54 Lone Star crossover victory over the Redmen Saturday at Dobbins Field House.NSU fell to 4-11 on the year, while MSU won for the first time on the road this season and improved to 9-7. The Redmen connected on just five-of-26 shots from the field in the opening half, but only trailed 26-23 at halftime. Despite bettering the mark in the final stanza (12-of-28) and tying the game at 30-all early in the second half, eight turnovers and a less than adequate defensive effort spelled doom for the sixth consecutive game. January broke the tie with a trey and tip-in basket on back-to-back MSU possessions for a 35-30 lead. Following a Shiloh Shores layup with 15:30 to go, the Redmen were outscored by a margin of 13-5 over the next five minutes as the Indians took control. Behind January's performance, Justin James also chipped in 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for MSU. Shores led the Redmen with 17 points, while Shad Roome added 14 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Josh Talley had 12. The Redmen fell for the fifth straight time and had their record drop to 4-10. Drury improved to 11-5 and won both meetings this season against NSU. It appeared the game was headed to a second extended period when Marcus Hines hit two free throws for NSU with just over seven seconds to play to knot the contest at 61-all. After Rob Powell missed two-of-three charity attempts, Hines was fouled after grabbing the offensive rebound. However, Kimbrough took the inbounds pass and drove the length of the court against pressure and pulled up at the Panther free throw line for the game-winner. Drury was four-for-five from the field in OT and led by as many as nine points, 59-50, before NSU's comeback attempt. In regulation, Ranaldo Spotwood came up with a steal with just under 20-seconds left with the game tied at 49-49. NSU played for the final shot and freshman Josh Talley's 10-footer from the right baseline rimmed out to force the extra session. Collins Harris led Drury with 16 points and Kimbrough added 15. Harris scores six points in the overtime period. Shores was the workhorse for the Redmen in the opening half with 16 of his game-high 24 coming in the frame. Rollins Snaps Redmen Streak (12-18-04) LAS VEGAS, Nev. --- Ninth-ranked Rollins College used a 16-3 run over a 6:30 span early in the second half to claim a 52-44 victory over Northeastern State at the High Desert Classic late Saturday night. The loss snapped NSU's three game winning streak and the Redmen fell to 4-6 on the year. Rollins improved to 7-1. NSU held a 23-19 edge at halftime, but poor shooting in the final 16:30 led to the RC comeback. For the game the Redmen managed just 30 percent from the floor (14-of-47), including seven of 25 in the last 20 minutes. Rollins, behind Deon Troupe's 11 points, overcame a 29-24 deficit at the 16:57 mark. Paul Pardue's three-point basket tied the game at 29-all with 15:27 to go and the Tav's streak was underway. Shiloh Shores, who led NSU with 15 points, hit a five footer for a 33-32 RC lead with 12:33 left. But, that was the last field goal NSU would convert over the next 3:38. Troupe hit a trey, while Isaac Codrey and John Thinnes hit back-to-back buckets for a 40-32 Rollins edge. The Tavs took their largest lead of the contest, a 45-35 advantage, with 4:06 to play. NSU mounted a serious threat late when Rob Powell and Marcus Hines each nailed three point baskets and Pat Moore made the front end of two charity tosses and the Redmen trailed 45-42 with just over two minutes left. However, Shores's layup with :35 left was the final points of the night for the Redmen and Rollins converted five of six free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory. Powell and Hines backed up Shores' offensive effort with 12 and 10 points, respectively. NSU improved to 4-5 on the year with the Lone Star crossover victory. ACU fell to 5-4. Shiloh Shores led a balanced Redmen scoring attack with 21 points. Rob Powell had 18, Marcus Hines chipped in 11 and Shad Roome picked up his first double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Northeastern blistered the nets with a 61 percent shooting effort in the opening stanza and built a 35-24 cushion with 7:12 to play in the half. However, David Baxter took over the game for ACU over the next six minutes and scored 11 of his game-high 26 points to bring the Wildcats back to within 40-39 with less than a minute to go. Baxter had 21 points before halftime. Roome added a layup just before intermission to give NSU a 42-39 edge at the break. In the second half the Redmen outscored Abilene Christian 7-2 to start the frame for a 49-41 advantage. ACU rallied, however, and forged leads of 54-53 and 56-55 at the midway point. The turning point in the contest, though, came with just under 9:30 left. After the Wildcats had taken their final lead of the game, NSU mishandled the inbounds play and a held ball was called. Once the officials attempted to separate ACU's Matt Sutherland and NSU's Ty Merchant, Sutherland was called for a technical foul when he pushed Merchant. Shores made two free throws and the Redmen never again trailed. Abilene Christian stayed close over the next seven minutes and trailed 72-69 with 2:04 to go. NSU clamped down defensively and did not allow ACU to score again and the Redmen closed out the game by converting five-of-eight free throws to preserve the win. The Lions failed to convert a three-point field goal in the first half on six tries. In the final 20 minutes, NSU connected on 13-of-21 shots and never gave any ground to the Lions.
