The Savages, 17-9 overall and 9-3 league play, had four players score in double figures led by Eric Babers and Robert Aitkens with 20 points each. SOSU avenged an earlier loss to Northeastern State with great offensive execution. The Savage Storm hit 32-of-56 shots for 57 percent on the night.

The Redmen, led by senior Sid Melvin's 16 points, stayed close early and trailed 24-23 with less than 6 minutes to play in the first half.

However, Southeastern closed out the half on an 18-4 run to lead 42-27 at halftime, then led by as many as 69-36 midway through the second half and cruised the rest of the way.

Drought Costly to Redmen on Senior Night (2-22-06)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State led by 20 points in the first half, but a six minute shooting drought in the final half proved too costly as East Central charged back to claim a 68-63 Lone Star North win over the Redmen on Senior Night at Dobbins Field House.

The loss eliminated NSU (14-12 and 4-7) from postseason tournament contention, while ECU remained alive for one of the top four LSC North seeds with its 16-10 and 6-5 mark.

The Redmen stormed out of the gates in the first stanza by shooting 52 percent from the floor to build a seemingly comfortable 32-12 margin with 3:51 to go. However, the Tigers began their comeback with a 12-0 run to close out the half and trailed just 32-24 at halftime.

ECU's spurt continued to begin the final 20 minutes as the Tigers outscored NSU, 13-4, to pull to within 38-37 just 4:14 into the frame.

It appeared the Redmen would rebound from the rally with a flurry of their own that increased the margin to 52-40 at the 11:55 mark. But, the Tigers responded by scoring the game's next 13 points to stake a 53-52 lead with 6:18 left.

Freshman, Josh Dennis, broke the field goal drought with a bucket and free throw with 4:31 to play to put NSU in front again at 58-56.

The edge was short-lived, though, as Brandon Bingle had two layups and a free throw and Terrell Carpenter canned a jumper to give ECU a 63-58 margin with :46 to play. The Tigers sealed NSU's fate by connecting on five-of-six charity tosses down the stretch.

Pat Moore paced NSU with 16 points and seven rebounds, while teammates Sid Melvin and Bret Rubin had 11 each. Carpenter's 16 points led ECU. Dominique Williams and Jason Thomas chipped 13 and 11, respectively.

NSU honored its four senior student-athletes who played their final home games on Wednesday night. Cody Hopkins, Sid Melvin, Pat Moore and Ty Merchant were honored during a pregame ceremony. Merchant, the lone remaining member of NSU's 2003 national championship team, had knee surgery earlier Wednesday to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Northeastern State will wrap up the year on the road at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at 8:00 p.m.

Redmen Squeeze Past Aggies (2-15-06)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Lamont George scored 17 points Wednesday night, but his 28-footer with just :41 to play was the game-breaker as Northeastern State rallied past Cameron, 64-61, at Dobbins Field House in a men's Lone Star North Division game.

Just seconds earlier, Sid Melvin put the Redmen (14-10 and 4-5) ahead for good with another trey that turned a 58-56 deficit into a 59-58 lead. NSU was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory and stay alive in the hunt for a postseason tournament berth. Cameron fell to 11-13 and 1-8.

After shooting just 31 percent from the field in the opening half, NSU's fortunes reversed dramatically with a 16-for-24 effort (.667) in the final 20 minutes. The Aggies were held to 37 percent on the night but held a 26-23 margin at halftime.

Behind Matt Reid's play early in the second period, Cameron forged an 11 point lead twice, 36-25 and 41-30. However, NSU responded with a 9-0 spurt to cut its deficit to 43-42 midway through the stanza as the Aggies shooting woes began to surface and the Redmen parlayed three turnovers into points.

Arthur Trousdell hit a layup and Reid added a bucket and trey on the next three trips up the floor as Cameron rebuilt a 54-46 edge with just under seven minutes left.

Once again, though, the Redmen answered with a Jeremiah Turner bucket and four points from Pat Moore to pull to within 54-52 with 5:11 to go.

The rest of the way the game was a two-possession affair. Marlon Bernard's layup put Cameron in front 58-52 at the 3:53 mark, but that was the Aggies' final basket of the contest as Reid added just three charity tosses for CU's final scoring.

Reid had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Aggies, but was only six-of-20 from the floor, and Trousdell had 13.

Behind George's 17 point effort, Moore added 12 and Melvin chipped in 10. Turner led the Redmen with seven caroms.

Northeastern State will journey to Weatherford on Saturday to meet Southwestern Oklahoma State at 4:00 p.m. The Redmen will close out the regular season with a home game on Wednesday, Feb. 22, against East Central before playing at Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday, Feb. 26. Redmen Suffer Setback to Lions (2-11-06)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- After playing "giant killers" by knocking off the Lone Star North Division leaders its past two games, Northeastern State started slowly and never recovered in an 80-71 loss to Texas A&M-Commerce at Dobbins Field House Saturday afternoon.

The Redmen (13-10 and 3-5) shot just 31 percent from the floor in the first half as the Lions (14-9 and 4-4) roared to an insurmountable 39-25 margin at halftime. NSU nearly pulled off a miraculous comeback in the final period by canning seven three-point field goals and shooting 56 percent from the floor. But the damage had already been done as A&M-Commerce managed to hang on at the end for the victory.

Jermart Miller was the workhorse for the Lions, scoring 11 of his game-high 19 points in the final 20 minutes.

NSU, which trailed by as many as 17 points (41-24) with 19:43 left, battled back to a two point deficit at 69-67 at the 3:32 mark. TAMU-Commerce's Chris Fantroy picked up his fifth foul and was assessed a technical for throwing an object off the court. Lamont George hit both technical free throws and Pat Moore followed it up with two more to make the game a one possession affair.

Miller and Moore hit traded baskets for their respective teams over the next 1:30 as the Lions remained in front 71-69. After Lamar Searight converted a pair of charity tosses with 1:11 to go, NSU misfired on its next possession and the TAMUC's Martel Jones hit a layup for a 75-69 cushion at teh :28 mark.

Moore kept the Redmen close with a layup with :22 left, but the Redmen were forced to foul. Texas A&M-Commerce hit all four free throws down the stretch to preserve its victory.

The Redmen were led in scoring by Moore's 15 points, 11 of those coming in the last half, and George had 10.

Northeastern State will host East Central on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 8:00 p.m. before playing at Southwestern on Saturday.

Redmen End Skid, Stun Savage Storm (2-4-06)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State snapped a three-game losing streak Saturday by knocking Southeastern Oklahoma State from the ranks of the Lone Star North unbeaten with a thrilling 56-53 verdict before a standing-room only Hall of Fame crowd at Jack Dobbins Field House.

NSU (12-9 and 2-4) took an early double-digit advantage, then got trey from Sid Melvin, a bucket from Bret Rubin and a pair of clutch free throws from Ty Merchant with 6.6 seconds to play to eke out the win. SOSU (13-7 and 5-1) lost its first LSC North game of the year and had its five game winning string halted.

Southeastern whittled away at a 41-30 deficit with 14:36 left with a 23-6 run, spurred by Jason Stampley's nine points, to take its largest lead of the game at 53-47 with 3:18 to play.

But, the Savage Storm failed to score another point the rest of the way as NSU's defense clamped down.

Melvin, who led all scorers with 21 points, hit a pair of charity tosses with 2:21 left before connecting on a 22-foot jumper on the Redmen's next possession to pull bring it to a 43-42 SOSU advantage. The Savage Storm's Matt White misfired on two free throws with :1:06 to go and Rubin converted a layup to give NSU the lead for good with only :39 remaining.

Stampley turned the ball over with :07 to go and Southeastern fouled Merchant on the inbounds play. The Lebanon, Ohio, senior hit both ends of the bonus and SOSU failed to get off a shot at the buzzer.

It appeared early that the Redmen might roll to an easy victory with a 20-7 run to start the game. The Savage Storm pulled to within 24-22 at the 4:35 mark, but NSU regained momentum and led 32-24 at halftime. Melvin's trifecta with :19 to play in the half was first tallied as a two-point bucket, but the officials corrected the error to begin the second half and awarded the basket as a three-pointer.

Eric Babers led Southeastern with 14 points and Stampley added 13.

Northeastern State will begin the second round of LSC North action on the road Monday by meeting rival Central Oklahoma at 8 p.m. at Hamilton Fieldhouse in Edmond. The Redmen return home on Saturday, Feb. 11, to host Texas A&M-Commerce at 4 p.m.

Sluggish Redmen Drop Third Straight (Jan. 16, 2006)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Sam Belt scored 16 points and Kentrell Gaddis added 10 as Central Oklahoma staved off a fierce Northeastern State rally for a 53-48 victory in the Lone Star Conference North opener for both schools here Monday night.

The Bronchos iproved to 8-8 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Redmen dropped their third consecutive game and fell to 10-6 and 0-1.

NSU managed just 10 field goals on the night and shot a season low 24.4 percent from the field, including three-of-19 from behind the arc. In the previous two games the Redmen have shot a disappointing 26-of-90 from the floor and only seven-of-41 from the arc.

Still, a scappy defensive effort kept NSU within striking distance to the bitter end.

Central Oklahoma constructed an insurmountable 40-27 advantage midway through the final period before the Redmen came fighting back. Doing damage at the free throw line, Northeastern State whittled away at the deficit with Josh Dennis, Cody Hopkins and Lamont George hitting nine of 10 charity tosses during a 9-2 spurt that brought the game to within 46-45 with 2:50 to play.

Belt made a layup on UCO's next possession for a three point cushion. After Hopkins missed a jumper with 1:45 to go, the Bronchos played ball control and grabbed two offensive rebounds off missed shots with only 31 seconds remaining. Gaddis and Belt were a combined four-of-five at the stripe down the stretch to preserve the UCO win as NSU got only a trifecta from Sid Melvin at the :12 mark.

Pat Moore paced the Redmen with 13 points, while Melvin chipped in 11 and grabbed a team-high eight boards.

Northeastern State will continue LSC North action at Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

NSU Hands WTAMU 64-50 Setback (01-07-06)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Bret Rubin and Derrick White scored 15 points apiece to lead Northeastern State to a 64-50 win over West Texas A&M in a men's Lone Star Conference crossover game in Dobbins Field House Saturday afternoon. The win kept WTAMU from winning a game against an Oklahoma school this season.

White, who tossed in 12 in the opening stanza, helped propel the Redmen to a 10-3 mark. WTAMU fell to 9-4.

In a game that saw NSU blister the nets for 61 percent shooting in the first half (14-of-23), it was more the Redmen defense that spelled the difference. The Buffaloes were limited to just 28.6 percent shooting (16-of-56). WTAMU made just seven shots on 25 attempts in the first half and only nine-of-31 in the final stanza.

It appeared Northeastern State might run away with an easy win in the first period after holding the lead for much of the half. White's three-point play, a steal and Lamont George's trey gave NSU a 12-8 advantage with 3:52 left. WTAMU cut its deficit to one on two occasions before the Redmen responded with a 15-4 spurt to close out the half and lead 31-19.

Down by 10, 36-26, with 16:56 to go, the Buffaloes mounted a serious comeback bid and tied the game at 43-all at the 8:50 mark. The threat was short-lived, however, with Northeastern scoring seven straight and using an 18-4 run to put the game away with just over 3:30 left.

NSU had significant contributions from Ty Merchant, who tossed in a career-high 11 points, and Pat Moore, who had nine points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocked shots. George also had nine points on three-of-five shooting from behind the arc. George drained two treys at critical times to give NSU leads of 50-43 and 61-47.

Damien Lolan had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards to lead the Buffs and Steve Jackson chipped in 10.

Northeastern State, 5-1 against the Lone Star Conference South Division, will close out that portion of its schedule next week with road games at Midwestern State on Jan. 12 and at Tarleton State on Jan. 14. Both games tip at 8:00 p.m.

Redmen Whip 'Hounds

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Sid Melvin scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half and teammate Bret Rubin came off the bench to add a game-high 16 as Northeastern State raced past Eastern New Mexico 65-54 in a Lone Star Conference crossover game before a sparce crowd at Dobbins Field House Thursday night.

The Redmen improved to 9-3 overall and has already eclipsed it win production from a year ago when they struggled to an 8-19 mark. ENMU fell to 4-8.

After a sluggish start that saw the Greyhounds jump in front by as many as eight points twice, 14-6 and 20-12, NSU battled back to eventually claim the lead before halftime behind a variety of contributors on both ends of the floor. The Redmen used a 17-3 run to close out the first stanza and its defense allowed only a three-point field goal in the final 8:57 of the frame. During the spurt, Rubin tossed in seven, Pat Moore added five, Ben Rovenstine connected on a trifecta and Derrick White had a layup.

NSU hit its first five field goals of the second half and saw its advantage balloon to an insurmountable 19 points, 62-43, late in the period. Head coach Larry Gipson cleared the bench and the 'Hounds outscored the Redmen 11-3 in the last 6:02 for the final verdict.

Moore recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The senior center logged four steals, two assists and blocked two shots in 27 minutes of action. Eastern New Mexico was paced by Tristan Largent and Mikal Monette who had 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Northeastern State was very effective from the floor, converting 27-of-53 shots (50.9 percent) and limited the Greyhounds to just 45 percent.

The Redmen will continue LSC crossover action at home on Saturday, Jan. 7, by hosting West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. at Dobbins Field House.

Hornets Use Sledge to Hammer Redmen (12-17-05)

EMPORIA, Kansas --- Tyrell Sledge scored a game-high 26 points to lead Emporia State to an 87-76 victory over Northeastern State at W. L. White Auditorium Saturday night.

The loss dropped the Redmen to 8-3 on the year, while the Hornet, who avenged an earlier loss to NSU, improved to 8-3.

Sledge was 7-of-8 from the field, including a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, to pace ESU in the win. Leroy Dawson came off the bench to add 16 points, while Shawn Herrman and Ryan Blevins tossed in 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Lamont George's 20 points paced NSU.

The first half was one of streaks with the Redmen racing out to a 15-5 advantage over the opening 6:53 of the contest only to see Emporia State rally to cut its deficit to 17-16 during the next four minutes. NSU, however, answered with a 9-2 run to push its lead back to eight, 26-18, at the 9:25 mark.

ESU then closed out the half with a 26-10 spurt to stake a 44-36 margin at intermission and was never threatened again. The Hornets extended their lead to as many as 18 points, 63-45) on a Sledge layup with 9:54 to go and the Redmen failed to cut into the double digit deficit the rest of the way.

Northeastern State will be idle until after the Christmas Break. The Redmen will begin the second semester with a pair of home games by entertaining Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 5 at 8 p.m. and West Texas A&M at 4 p.m. on Jan. 7 at Dobbins Field House. Both games are Lone Star Conference crossover affairs.

Redmen Hang On, Beat ACU 60-57 (12-10-05)

ABILENE, Texas --- Lamont George poured through a team-high 18 points, 15 in the first half, and Northeastern State fought off a ferocious Abilene Christian comeback bid for a thrilling 60-57 victory at Moody Coliseum Saturday afternoon in a Lone Star Conference crossover game.

The Redmen (8-2) won their third consecutive game this week, while ACU fell to 1-6.

NSU opened up an insurmountable 21-point cushion midway through the final half, but failed to score a field goal in the last 4:57, and the Wildcats came roaring back to provide a wild finish. Bret Rubin's bucket at the 11:12 mark put the Redmen in front 51-30 and it appeared Northeastern was headed to an easy victory.

However, ACU used a 27-7 run over the next 11 minutes and Demarcquez Rembert's two free throws with :11 to go brought Abilene Christian to within 58-57.

Ty Merchant nailed two charity tosses with just six seconds to go and the Wildcats failed to get off a decent shot as time expired to preserve the Redmen victory.

George was seven-of-10 from the field, but perfect in the opening 20 minutes on six attempts as NSU led from start-to-finish. After shooting 42 percent from the floor in the first half, the Redmen struggled in the final stanza, making just six field goals on 20 attempts. Rubin finished with 14 points.

ACU's Rembert led all scorers with 21.

Northeastern State will be idle for finals next week, but will travel to Emporia State on Saturday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. The game will be a rematch on the Nov. 29th game in which the Redmen prevailed 69-57.

Redmen Race Past Angelo State (12-8-05)

SAN ANGELO, Texas --- Northeastern State used a 20-0 run midway through the first half to dispose of Angelo State, 83-62, in a Lone Star Conference crossover game at the Junnell Center Thursday night.

The Redmen won their second straight game and improved to 7-2 on the year. ASU lost for the first time at home this season and fell to 5-3.

NSU shot a blistering 53 percent (9-of-17) from behind the arc, and 59.3 percent overall in the opening stanza to race out to a comfortable advantage. Sid Melvin (13), Pat Moore (13) and Bret Rubin (12) combined for 38 of Northeastern's 46 points in the frame.

ASU led 9-5 at the 15:43 mark before the Redmen's spurt blew open the contest. With 10:33 to go, NSU had constructed a 25-9 margin and its lead grew to as many as 25 points, 46-21, with just 42 seconds to play in the frame.

The Redmen also did quite a bit of damage at the free throw line, converting 23-of-26 attempts on the night. Moore had a bucket and four free throws, while Reggie Smith was four-of-four at the stripe to begin the final half as NSU's cushion ballooned to 57-29 just 5:25 into the second half.

The Rams made a modest comeback bid late in the game by cutting their deficit to 73-58 with just under five minutes left. But, NSU responded with a 10-4 run to close out the game and preserve the victory.

Rubin finished with a team-high 19 points, while Melvin added 18, Moore 17 and Lamont George netted 10. Quinn Barfield had 26 points for Angelo State in a losing cause.

Northeastern State will continue its LSC crossover road swing on Saturday when it travels to Abilene Christian for a 4:00 p.m. encounter with the Wildcats.

Redmen Rally Past Missouri Southern (12-6-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Sid Melvin scored 14 of his game-high 22 points in the final half and Northeastern State hit seven treys in the period to rally past Missouri Southern State, 73-70, at Dobbins Field House Tuesday night.

Melvin was three-of-five from beyond the arc in the second half, while teammate Derrick White (17 points) hit back-to-back treys to spur a ferocious NSU comeback.

Trailing 68-66 with only 38 seconds to play, Northeastern State's Lamont George converted one-of-two free throws before Melvin stole the inbounds pass from MSSU's Tyler Ryerson and was fouled. Melvin sank the first, but missed the second to knot the game at 68-all with :28 left. However, Pat Moore grabbed the offensive rebound and Lamont George calmly nailed a 21-footer in front of the Redmen bench for a 71-68 advantage.

Myron Hodge grabbed an offensive rebound for the Lions off a Quentin Edwards miss with :11 left and Daron Harris fouled Ty Merchant, who drained both charity tosses for the deciding outcome with :11 to go. Hodges missed a three-point effort with :03 left to preserve the NSU victory.

Northeastern State trailed 30-23 at halftime after shooting just 28.6 percent in the stanza and the Lions opened up their largest lead of the night at 35-27 with 17:35 remaining.

That's when the Redmen caught fire.

Melvin had a driving layup, followed it up with a three-pointer nd Derrick White converted a pair of charity tosses to tie the game at 35-35 at the 16:22 mark. Over the next eight minutes, the Redmen (6-2) extended their lead to as many as seven, 56-49, with 8:35 to go. But, MSSU (6-3) answered with a rally of its own to eventually take a 66-64 lead with 1:56 to go.

The Lions had a balanced scoring attack, led by the 13-point performances of Dan Jones and Ryerson. Hodge chipped in 12, while Edwards and Ed Miles had 10 each.

Moore had a double-double for the Redmen with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Bret Rubin came off the bench to add 12.

Northeastern State will resume Lone Star Conference play on Thursday when the Redmen meet Angelo State at 8 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas. NSU will close out the week at Abilene Christian for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Wonder Boys Eke Past Redmen (12-3-05)

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. --- Denarryl Rice's three-point basket with 1.4 seconds to play lifted Arkansas Tech to a 61-58 win over Northeastern State at the Tucker Coliseum Saturday night.

NSU lost for the second time in as many outings and fell to 5-2 on the year. ATU improved to 4-1.

Rice, who led all scorers with 17 points, canned four-of-seven treys in the contest and his game-winner broke a 58-58 deadlock. The game featured eight ties and five lead changes, the last coming off Rice's heroics.

Freshman Ben Rovenstine had tied the game on a trey with :14 to go for his only basket of the game. However, NSU was unable to hold off the Wonder Boys, who led by as many as nine, 56-47, late in the second half.

The Redmen got 15 points from Sid Melvin in a losing cause. Derrick White and Pat Moore added 10 apiece.

Northeastern State led 30-29 at halftime after shooting 11-of-25 (.440) in the opening period with Melvin providing much of the offense. The senior guard poured through 12 during the period. In fact, the Redmen had an eight point lead, 26-18, with just 4:31 remaining in the period.

ATU used an 11-3 run to close out the frame with Rone Smith scoring six of his 16 points during the spurt.

Northeastern State will attempt to end its two-game skid on Tuesday, Dec. 6, when it hosts Missouri Southern at 7 p.m. at Dobbins Field House.

Mistakes Costly In Redmen Defeat (12-1-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Miscues and poor shooting added up to a 55-51 Northeastern State loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville before a packed Dobbins Field House crowd here Thursday night in the Lone Star Conference opener for the Redmen.

The loss snapped NSU's five game winning streak as the Redmen lost for the first time this season and fell to 5-1. TAMUK remained unbeaten at 4-0.

Northeastern committed 20 turnovers, 10 in each half, but held a 10 point cushion twice before intermission, 26-16 and 28-18. However, the Redmen managed just three field goal and six points in the final 2:15 of the first half through the 7:25 mark of the second half --- a span of 14:50 --- but still trailed by just two, 39-37, at that juncture.

Bret Rubin, whose 13 points was a team-high, nailed a trey with 4:53 to play to pull the Redmen to within 41-40 and it remained a two possession game until the end.

The Javelinas could easily have put the game away in the second half at the charity stripe, but made only 12-of-22 free throws to keep the Redmen within striking distance. A&M-Kingsville did, however, hit seven-of-nine in the final 1:10 to preserve the victory. The Hoggies had 28 free throws on the night, compared to just 12 for NSU.

Remi Yusuf led all scorers with 22 points and his 48-foot buzzer-beater to end the half pulled TAMUK to within 28-23 at the half. Bobby Pandy added 11 points and eight rebounds.

NSU finished the second half by shooting 39 percent on seven of 18 tries.

Head coach Larry Gipson said the loss was not the result of poor defense.

"Our defense played well enough for us to win the game," said Gipson. "We had 20 turnovers in 60 possessions; that's one-third of our possessions and you can't do that against a good team like Texas A&M-Kingsville. We're a young team and I told them that this was a great learning experience. We'll have to see how they respond on Saturday."

Northeastern State will step out of LSC action on Saturday to travel to Arkansas Tech. Tip-off at Tucker Coliseum in Russellville, Ark., is set for 4:00 p.m.

NSU Stings Hornets (11-29-05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Lamont George hit four straight three-point field goals to begin the second half as Northeastern State stunned 16th-ranked Emporia State, 69-57, before 1,000 fans at Dobbins Field House Tuesday night.

The Redmen, off to their best start since the championship season in 2002-2003, improved to 5-0, while ESU fell to 5-2.

NSU needed everything George could offer up as the Hornets battled to seven ties and six lead changes. The two teams combined for 15 treys, but in the end, it was clutch shooting on the part of the methodical Redmen that spelled the difference.

Northeastern took the lead for good on George's fourth trifecta of the half for a 35-34 advantage with 13:23 to go. The basket spurred a 7-0 run for the Redmen and NSU went on to build a 51-38 cushion with 5:38 left.

Just when it appeared Northeastern would turn the game into a rout, Emporia State came alive and pulled to within 63-57 with only 33 seconds to play. However, Sid Melvin hit a layup on NSU's next possession and a technical foul was called on the ESU bench after a missed three-point effort from Tyrell Sledge. The final result was two free throws from George and Ty Merchant closed out the scoring with a pair of charity tosses at the :12 mark for the deciding points.

George led all scorers with 23, while Pat Moore used muscled his way inside for 16 points on seven-of-eight shooting. Sledge and Wes Book paced Emporia State with 16 points each.

NSU shot 58.3 percent in the second half, converting on 14-of-24 field goals and limited ESU to 57 points, some 23 points fewer than their season average. The Hornets committed 18 turnovers and made only 21-of-48 shots on the night and seven-of-22 from beyond the arc.

Northeastern State will open Lone Star Conference play on Thursday when it hosts Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8 p.m. at Dobbins Field House in a crossover game for both squads.

Redmen Weather Storm (11/27/05)

TAHLEQUAH, OKLA --- Sid Melvin poured through a game-high 20 points and Northeastern State converted six consecutive free throws in the final 14 seconds to hold off stubborn Southern Nazarene, 62-56, at Dobbins Field House Saturday night.

The Redmen improved to 4-0 on the year, while SNU lost for the first time in seven outings and fell to 6-1.

Melvin scored 15 of his points in the opening half as NSU built a seemingly comfortable 31-20 margin at halftime.

However, the Crimson Storm battled back by scoring the first eight points of the second stanza to trail by just three, 31-28. From there, it was a dog fight, but the Redmen were able to answer every run SNU made in the frame.

Northeastern State responded with back-to-back treys from Ty Merchant and Reggie Smith's charity toss for a 38-30 margin and Pat Moore's layup gave the Redmen a double-digit lead at 42-32 with 12:14 to play.

Over the next four mintues, though, Southern Nazarene used a 12-2 run to pull to with two points, only to see Northeastern answer with five straight for a 52-45 score with 6:21 left.

SNU's last attempt at a comeback win came with 1:13 to go when Brandon Weaver hit a pair of charity tosses and Northeastern's lead had diminished to 58-56.

Melvin hit a pair of free throws with :14 left and Lamont George nailed both ends at the line after a missed Crimson Storm trey attempt from Brent Kimmel to preserve the victory.

Weaver led SNU with 17 points.

Northeastern State will battle Emporia State at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Dobbins Field House.

Moore Dunks Redmen Over Sharks (11-19-05)

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. --- Northeastern State overcame an 11-point deficit and center Pat Moore's dunk with :14 left lifted the Redmen to a thrilling 58-57 win over Nova Southeastern (Fla.) in the championship game of the Russell Marshall Invitational Tournament at Bill Vining Arena Saturday night.

The win kept Northeastern unbeaten for the year as NSU improved to 3-0. Nova fell to 1-1.

Moore's game-winner came after the Sharks had retaken a 57-56 lead on David Naylor's bucket with :37 left. Moore fouled Naylor on the play, but Naylor was unable to convert the conventional three-point play.

Following a Redmen timeout, Sid Melvin found Moore open with :14 left and the 6-8 center slammed home the deciding points. But, the final seconds were nerve-wrenching.

The Sharks' Kenny Faulk missed a jumper and Tim Coenraad's tip-in attempt bounced off the rim with :01 left. It appeared time had expired, but one second was put back on the clock. Following timeouts by each team, Nova was unable to get a shot off as the game ended, giving Northeastern the title.

Nova Southeastern forged ahead by 11, 36-25, just 3:13 into the second period on Calvin Jenkins's jumper. However, the Redmen used a 22-10 run over the next nine minute to stake a short-lived 47-46 lead at the 4:55 mark. During the spurt, Northeastern canned four three-point field goals and Bret Ruben scored eight of his game-high 20 points along the way. Ruben was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and Lamont George was listed on the All-Tournament Team.

Ruben hit a trey and a field goal to give Northeastern State its largest lead of the half, 54-49, with 3:37 to go before the Sharks countered with back-to-back buckets from Coenraad and Faulk to pull to within 54-53 a minute later.

Reggie Smith increased NSU's lead back to three, 56-53, with a layup with 2:15 to go, and that set the stage for the dramatic finish.

Calvin Jenkins led Nova Southeastern with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Oresti Nitsios added 11. Lamont George followed Ruben's game-high effort for NSU with 11 and four assists.

The Sharks held a 29-21 lead at halftime by limiting the Redmen to just 29.6 percent field goal shooting. However, Northeastern regrouped to shoot 13-of-27 in the final half, including a whopping six-of-nine from beyond the arc.

Northeastern State will be idle this week before hosting NAIA's Southern Nazarene next Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at Dobbins Field House.

NSU converted 17-of-28 field goals in the first half, but needed a 7-2 run to close out the period to grab ahold of a 42-34 advantage at intermission.

The Redmen opened up a 10 point cushion, 46-36, just 2:46 into the second half before the Wildcats scored the next 12 points to take a 48-46 lead at the 14:30 mark. The two teams battled back-and-forth over the next 10 minutes where eight ties were forged.

Ruben's layup put the Redmen in front for good, 65-63, at the 3:58 mark of the second half and he added another short jumper on NSU's next possession when he followed up a miss with an offensive rebound and put-back for a 67-63 margin.

ACU got a pair of free throws from Demarcquez Rembert with :44 left for the final outcome. Turner came up with a steal for NSU with :11 left, but Ty Merchant missed the front end of a bonus charity toss and norman Alexander's three-point effort for Abilene Christian missed the mark with just three seconds to go.

Redmen Clip The Eagles Wings (11/15/05)

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. --- Northeastern State had six players score in double figures, led by Bret Ruben's 16 points, in a season-opening 100-41 demolition of Rhema Bible College at Dobbins Field House Tuesday night. The Redmen eclipsed the century mark for the first time since 2001 when NSU downed Central Oklahoma 104-71 in a Lone Star North encounter. Earlier that season, Northeastern throttled Rhema 107-52.

Jeremiah Turner scored 15, Sid Melvin added 14, Lamont George chipped in 13 and Earnest Williams and Derrick White poured through 10 apiece for NSU (1-0).

After a pair of tough exhibition losses to begin the year (at Oklahoma University and Oral Roberts University), the Redmen were convincing in disposing of the Eagles (0-1) with a stout defensive effort to go along with outstanding offense. NSU shot 58 percent from the floor, including a blistering 19-of-29 in the final half, while limiting Rhema to just 30.6 from the field for the night. The Redmen also forced 27 turnovers and had only eight miscues.

The Eagles had the hot hand early and took a 5-1 lead through the opening 2:10 before the Redmen offense got on track. Jeremiah Turner scored back-to-back buckets, while Melvin and George nailed a trey each to tie the game at 11-all with 12:54 left in the first.

     Then, the rout was on.

Northeastern scored the next 13 points and used a 36-11 run to close out the period for a 47-22 cushion at halftime.

The last half was a track meet for NSU with numerous steals converted into easy transition baskets. Starting center, Pat Moore, was the only player in uniform who did not score for the Redmen. In fact, Moore never attempted a shot, but pulled down two rebounds and had three assists in just 14 minutes of action.

Adrian Cook scored 13 points and Jerid Cook added 11 to pace Rhema.

Northeastern State will travel to Arkadelphia, Ark., this weekend to participate in the Ouachita Baptist Tournament. NSU will meet LSC South foe Abilene Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday in the opener with the time and opponent of Saturday's game to be determined.

TULSA, OKLA --- Oral Roberts University had more than they bargined for Saturday evening at the Mabee Center as Northeastern State nearly stunned a crowd of 4200 in a 76-65 loss to the Eagles.

ORU jumped out early and scored the games first 14 points before a layup at the 13:07 mark by Pat Moore took the goose egg off the board for the Redmen.

The Golden Eagles lead by as many as 23 points in the first half and took a 49-27 lead into the locker room.

The Redmen went on a 12-1 run to begin the second half to pull to with 11 at 50-39.

Northeastern continued to put the pressure on the Eagles in the second half and only trailed by seven points with two minutes to go in the game. But the combo of Caleb Green and Ken Tutt was too much for the Redmen in the final minutes.

Bret Ruben had the hot hand for the Redmen, going 9-13 from the field and 3-5 from behind the arc to finish with 21 points and six rebounds. Lamont George chiped in 10 in the losing effort.
